This is my pet hate! I loathe it! I despise "was sat" too.

I know an English teacher who regularly says "I was stood / sat". I always want to ask her who put her there! I also hate it when people are describing a past event and use the present continuous. Ggrrrrrr.

Well, perhaps the gates grabbed him and put him in position? If so it would probably have shown up on the CCTV footage and be a bigger story than the original Gategate, though.
