From this article: www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2012/dec/21/plebgate-pm-left-mitchell-swinging

'The CCTV footage shows that just one member of the public was stood by the gates at the time of the incident, and Mitchell appeared not to be talking as he wheeled his bike to the pedestrian entrance.'

FFS.

Angry I HATE the fact that this appears to be acceptable now!

Monty27 · 22/12/2012 00:15

STANDING GRRR or just 'he/she stood...'

Oh fgs

Sorry for shouting :)

This is my pet hate! I loathe it! I despise "was sat" too.

Festivelyfedup · 22/12/2012 17:34

I know an English teacher who regularly says "I was stood / sat". I always want to ask her who put her there! I also hate it when people are describing a past event and use the present continuous. Ggrrrrrr.

LRDtheFeministDude · 22/12/2012 17:41

I don't think it's acceptable.

If it's a colloquialism, fine - but not in the Guardian in a news story, please!

Glad you are all in agreement. Smile

What other grammatical inaccuracies and phrases do we all loathe?!!

I hate it when people ask "Is there anything I can help yourselves with?"

JessieMcJessie · 30/12/2012 16:21

Yes. Only you can help yourselves.
OP, write to the Guardian, this must be stamped out!

CaseyShraeger · 30/12/2012 16:24

Well, perhaps the gates grabbed him and put him in position? If so it would probably have shown up on the CCTV footage and be a bigger story than the original Gategate, though.
