Help me find the word I mean which is on the tip of my tongue, please?

I KNOW there's a term for this, and it's eluding me this morning.

Suppose you give an example to illustrate a point, but the things you choose to use as examples are obviously stupid. For example, if I'm trying to explain gravity to a child, and I say that the earth exerts a pull, so that if an ironing board is thrown in the air by a quantity surveyor, it is as though lots and lots of little wasps are pulling it back to the floor.

Does anyone know what I mean? And what is the word or the kind of argument I'm talking about? PLEASE!

Analogy?

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 26/09/2012 11:56

Yeah, but specifically one with odd or dissonant comparisons....?

Are you talking about a malaprop?

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 26/09/2012 12:27

No, that's just using the wrong word that sounds similar, isn't it? Comparisons are odorous etc.

Poor analogy?

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 26/09/2012 13:05

Oh gosh, sorry I'm being a pain and not explaing myself well: the analogy is fine, but the examples used are odd or dissonant. Ie., why ironing board, why accountant....?

Probably there just isn't a word!

Weird analogy. Wink

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 26/09/2012 13:23

not hyperbole?

choccyp1g · 26/09/2012 13:27

Mixed metaphor?

monkeymushroom · 26/09/2012 14:59

Far-fetched analogy?

Asinine · 26/09/2012 15:05

Hmmm, Mixed metaphor? Really a mixed analogy....

Flimflammery · 26/09/2012 15:15

straw man argument? where you deliberately use a weak example of your opponent's point of view so that you can attack it

squeaver · 26/09/2012 15:16

I can only think of poor analogy but your example isn't a poor analogy, it;s just a bit odd.

bunnysmummy · 26/09/2012 15:43

I think you mean an informal fallacy, which can be broken down into various categories and this would be maybe a false analogy. You'll need to look into logic and reasoning there loads of different terms for this kind of thing.

somebloke123 · 26/09/2012 16:33

Spurious analogy?
