I have to use the second one in my work, but am now confused as to whether this is proper English or not.

(Posting here brings me out in a sweat, I'm going to put a [sic] in just in case)

The first one I would have thought.

It made me wonder if the second was an older and more proper way of doing things, but the 1st was just common usage.

I've always used ellipses without a space. I've done a quick search but there appear to be no clear rules.

Don't see why there should be a space. Punctuation is usually attached to the last word.

I always do the second one.

An elipsis feels as if it requires a space either side. Don't know why tho.
