Olympic pedantry

My partner says the man from the BBC keeps saying that "we are going to cover the 2012 Olympics like never before". He says that wouldn't be difficult as they have never covered it before. Any other Olympic pedants out there?

I was getting a bit fed up with the cycling commentator saying they were 'literally on fire'. No. No they weren't.

stargirl1701 · 07/08/2012 20:03

The use of medal as a verb. I have shouted at TV today.

lilbreeze · 07/08/2012 20:06

I agree, but... I did quite like it when Tweddle medalled Grin

LaGuerta · 07/08/2012 20:08

The notion that some people are "making history".

We are all making history all of the time. It will only become obvious later on which bits are significant and to whom they are significant.

lellibobs · 07/08/2012 20:13

Just watching now and the commentator said someone's coach will be absolutely gutted. Let's hope not!

Garry Linekar: "There was one remarkable statistic amongst many remarkable statistics..." (in the triathlon).

WMittens · 07/08/2012 21:43

...someone's coach will be absolutely gutted.

I don't see the problem with that one, quite a common colloquialism where I'm from.

Although apparently every English noun can be verbed (which I'm not sure I agree with), 'medalled' is horrible.

We are all making history all of the time.

Not really. It's only history if it's recorded.

SweetestThing · 07/08/2012 21:44

One of the commentators said that someone's performance had 'improved drastically' -made me Hmm

LaGuerta · 07/08/2012 22:03

It's recorded in the individual's memory. This is how oral history can exist.

CatWithKittens · 08/08/2012 09:33

the comment that somebody was prepared to "lay down his life for his team mates" rather annoyed me - that is what soldiers do, not sportsmen, and I really feel is not an expression which should be used "lightly, unadvisedly or wantonly".

CatWithKittens · 08/08/2012 09:34

In fact I was so annoyed that just thinking about it made me miss the wrongly typed lower case start to that post. Sorry all you pedants, but at least I noticed first.

peeriebear · 08/08/2012 09:49

I do wonder why the sprinters keep saying they are going to 'execute' a race.

gettingtogrips · 08/08/2012 09:58

So many Union Flags being waved upside down. If you're competing for Team GB surely you should know which way up the flag flies.

lottiegb · 08/08/2012 10:52

So long as he wasn't literally gutted!
