I want a lie in and then I lay in. To me "lie" is before the event, "lay" is after.

MrGeresHamster · 05/08/2012 10:18

Is it a tense thing?

I am having a lie in.

Versus

I had a lay in.

They don't really work if you swap them around.

TheCunningStunt · 05/08/2012 10:20

That's what I think mrgere

bigkidsdidit · 05/08/2012 10:20

I think it's always lie

FoofHundredMetreFreestyle · 05/08/2012 10:22

Agree with Cunning.

slartybartfast · 05/08/2012 10:23

i had a lie in,

FoofHundredMetreFreestyle · 05/08/2012 10:24

Well I think it's

"I want a lie in"

"I had a lie in"

"I lay in"? Confused

Acumens100 · 05/08/2012 10:26

I've just had a lie in. I lay in bed this morning. She laid the baby on the bed. I will lay myself upon the bed. We will lie in bed together tomorrow. We lay in bed all yesterday. I was lying in bed. I had laid myself in bed. I lie in bed most mornings.

slartybartfast · 05/08/2012 10:26

or lain? Confused

bigkidsdidit · 05/08/2012 10:27

I think 'lie in' is a noun

I want a lie in / had a lie in

And the verb lie doesn't need conjugating to lay / laid

Level3at6months · 05/08/2012 10:29

Definitely 'lie in' unless you 'lay in' in the past, but since you wouldn't normally use 'lie in' as a verb, I wouldn't even use it then.

I'm with Foof and Acumens.

Living in Bristol, this thread is an ideal time for me to vent my frustrations at the Bristolian version of "lying"(not in the telling fibs sense!):led (might be written as "laid" but is pronounced "led"), as in:

"He was led down on the floor", "we were led there together", "I am led in bed" (yes, really),etc

Note how even the tense does not change anything - past, present or even future tense, it's all the same which makes it sound all the more wrong.
I have found myself explaining that no such word exists in this context and have even shown the Oxford University online description of the word "lie" and it's past, present and future particles as no one believed meShock and several had not even heard of the word "lain", including someone with an English degree!!

Ahhh, that's better, I've waited years to vent that to like-minded ones who may share my angst...

I hope I get laid tonight and then have a lie in tomorrow!

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 15/09/2012 01:37

I thought only hens lay and people lie?

McPhee · 15/09/2012 01:39
