Past tense of the verb 'to text?'
Loads of posters on here write "so I text him" or "he text me."

I get all stabby!!! Angry

The trouble is that "to text" is not a proper verb.

The full thing should be "to send a text message" or "to send a text"

I sent him a text
I have sent him a text
I like sending texts

Currently I would say
I texted him
I have texted him
I like texting

Is 'text' strictly a verb though? I thought it was shorthand for 'send a text', so past tense would be 'sent a text'.

Don't think txt spk is particularly concerned with correct tenses though!

Plenty of people use text messages without using txtspk.

I think it's because text is a newly made up word (relatively) and doesnt have proper grammar attached to it!

BreconBeBuggered · 31/07/2012 16:43

It's used as a verb, so it ought to have grown a past participle. Which in any civilised society would NOT be 'text'.

I reckon there's a case that the word 'text' has evolved into a verb in the same way that 'phone' did. But the past participle definitely has to be textED.
