Pedantry challenge

I've just seen a shop advertising "pannini's" for sale. If we were playing pedantry bingo, surely that would score maximum points available for one word. Can anyone beat that?

I once saw a sign outside a shop announcing that they sold 'friut's' (a tad unnecessary anyway, given there were bananas, apples and pineapples displayed outside).

Obviously I filed it away mentally just in case I ever had the opportunity to use it in a thread like this Grin

Gauchita · 28/06/2012 14:35

The worst one I've seen (food-related as well) is: "Sandwich's" on a shop sign. My eyes hurt Grin

AgentProvocateur · 28/06/2012 14:44

"hot and cold snax's".

Onthebottomwithawomansweekly · 28/06/2012 14:49

I'll go one better than Gauchita - Sandwitch's

squeaver · 28/06/2012 14:50

New's - in Sainsbury's.

MardyBra · 28/06/2012 17:06

These are great.

"Bespoke Bridleware". Wedding dress in the window.

MardyBra · 28/06/2012 17:11

For the bride who looks like a horse maybe?

OP posts:
Midge25 · 28/06/2012 17:13

Outside a farm shop: "potatoe's"

Abzs · 28/06/2012 17:18

"Ladie's clothing"

New signage where I work. We didn't put it up until the apostrophe had been doctored with coloured tape. Then demanded a new sign.

Gauchita · 28/06/2012 17:22

"For the bride who looks like a horse maybe?" Grin

Onthebottom, that one beats mine!

happyinherts · 28/06/2012 17:29

Left a big bar of chocolate with the cashier in Thorntons today for her to ice the greeting Happy Birthday James on whilst I went to the racks to choose a birthday card.

When I got back to till lady had put Happy Birthday Jame's on it. Who is Jame I asked? Blank look, it says James. Err no it doesn't - apostrophe belonging to Jame.... Refused to pay for said chocolate and left shop. How dumb is that? Is there anyone's name which has an apostrophe in?

Shame Thorntons - James would have loved that chocolate

NormaStanleyFletcher · 28/06/2012 17:33

Local pub where I used to live advertised an al'a carte menu.

Random

Nagoo · 28/06/2012 17:33

She does it on purpose.

Natural wastage that Grin You should have asked for a new one and taken that one as well, for your belly trouble.

iklboo · 28/06/2012 17:50

Shop near us has
New's of our cake pop's & muffin's

If they weren't so bloody gorgeous I'd boycott the shop.

MardyBra · 28/06/2012 19:09

Grin at these.

And Shock at Thorntons. Poor old Jame. I bet they'd get it right in Hotel Chocolat.

These are great. Can't think of one to contribute though!

MirandaGoshawk · 28/06/2012 19:21

But seriously, I've been wondering about this, the problems people have with plurals & apostrophes, there/their etc. In my schooldays the olden days everyone, pretty much, knew the correct spellings etc, or at least were taught them even if it didn't all sink in. But now...

My dch went to a nice village primary & then the best comp in the area (supposedly) and claim they weren't taught this stuff. They don't even know 'I before E except afte C..' which surelyis fundamental if you're going to learn how to spell. They both got GCSEs in English Lang but both have atrocious spelling.

So the lack of teaching coupled with the fact that young people don't read many books means that they haven't a clue about these rules. That's my theory, anyway. What do you reackon? Sorry to hijack thread.

MirandaGoshawk · 28/06/2012 19:22

Sorry about typos. Trying to cook & type at the same time. Blush

dearprudence · 28/06/2012 19:32

Here are my submissions for pedantry bingo.

Handwritten sign on a market stall: Laurndrey bag's
Outside a fruit and veg shop (extra points I hope for the classic location): Buzzy Lissies

MirandaGoshawk · 29/06/2012 22:23

Have posted this before, but I really hope that the hairdressers' by the cinema in Exeter is owned by someone called Gemma. It's called Hair Gem's.

(With the apostophe in the shape of a little gem.)

iklboo · 29/06/2012 22:29

Poor DS. With me as his mother he'll be correcting his teacher's work soon Blush

donnie · 29/06/2012 22:32

The premise is entirely wrong: the singular is panino. The plural is panini.

Just as one asks for a single cappuccino and two (or more) cappuccini.

Do people not know this?

MinnieBar · 29/06/2012 22:35

There's a sign near me that I drive past that states:

Cold drink's sold hear

I am always so tempted to stop and correct it Grin

LeeCoakley · 29/06/2012 22:39

I pass a sign every day that says 'Budgie's for sale'. My children are completely bored with me commenting every time 'Is he? Why? What's he done?'
