Chest of Draws?

YankNCock · 26/06/2012 15:30

I constantly see ads in papers and on the internet with 'draws' instead of 'drawers'. I've not counted, but I would say at least 1/3-1/2 of instances have the 'draws' spelling.

Never saw this when I lived in the U.S., now wondering if it is an accepted spelling in the UK? If it is, I can stop being annoyed by it and adjust the same way I have with all the other spelling differences.

Nope, should be chest of drawers. I've noticed the draws thing too. Wrong wrong wrong.

Shodan · 26/06/2012 15:52

Draws seems to have become a lot more prevalent these days. Wait until you see the famous 'chester draws'. Grin

suzikettles · 26/06/2012 15:53

It's a chest and it has drawers in it.

Draws is completely wrong but presumably spelled that way by people who've never seen it written down before by someone who can spell and don't pronounce their "r"s.

BonnieBumble · 26/06/2012 15:55

How should it be pronounced?

suzikettles · 26/06/2012 15:59

I'm sure the way people pronounce it is fine - it's just that most English accents don't really pronounce the "r" sound (to Scottish ears at least) so it's easier to hear draw/drawer as the same word.

Lots of Scottish people don't really pronounce the r at the ends of words any more either so it's probably a common mistake up here too.

Seona1973 · 26/06/2012 16:01

I'm Scottish and it annoys me to see the word 'draws' instead of 'drawers

hanahsaunt · 26/06/2012 16:01

Are people really that dim? How something is said is not indicative of how it is spelled.

BonnieBumble · 26/06/2012 16:03

So should drawers be pronounced drawrs with emphasis on the r?

My mum says drawers with emphasis on the er!

I always thought she was wrong but I'm
worried now that I have been mispronouncing it all my life!

suzikettles · 26/06/2012 16:07

It's pronounced differently depending on your accent.

I probably say something that sounds approximately like drohurrs - which is no doubt like fingernails down a blackboard for some people Wink

BonnieBumble · 26/06/2012 16:14

Ok I don't really have an accent and I say it to rhyme with roars.

My mum has a west country accent and she says it to rhyme with jodphurs.

suzikettles · 26/06/2012 16:17

See, I'd pronounce the word roars as roa-uhrrs so that doesn't really help me know how you pronounce it Wink. Everyone's got an accent (but I know what you mean).

MarjorieAntrobus · 26/06/2012 16:21

Well, because I know it is drawers I hear "drorr-erhs". Maybe if I thought it was draws I would hear "drorrs".

Yes, I know what you mean suzi, it's almost impossible to pass these pronunciations on without actually hearing each other.

YankNCock · 27/06/2012 08:25

Thanks everyone, happy to know I can continue to be irked by this one! It must have to do with the pronunciation. London-born husband says 'drawers' and 'draws' exactly the same, but at least in the region of the U.S. I'm from, they are pronounced very differently.

Draw-ers is knickers Wink
