I need a word - what is it?

I have been dumped by a 'friend' and am composing an email to her. I want a word that means;

shocked
hurt
appalled (by her treatment of me)
disgusted (ditto) AND
angry.

Is there a word which encapsulates all these in one?

Outraged ?

Catsmamma · 15/06/2012 17:08

astonished ??...maybe not strong enough.

shrimponastick · 15/06/2012 17:08

incensed ?

both just sound more angry than anything though don't they?

catinboots · 15/06/2012 17:09

saddened

catinboots · 15/06/2012 17:11

'saddened and disappointed' packs far more of a punch than anger and disgust

Gives you the moral high ground Smile

sparkybabe · 15/06/2012 18:52

THanks cat(s) and shrimp - saddened and disappointed doesn't portray the anger. Outraged/incensed - more angry than hurt and surprised. Astonished - more surprised than angry or hurt! Difficult one.

I think 'shocked and disgusted' always seems a bit of a tautology to me,wlthough I know they aren't. I can't think of one without the other IYSWIM.

Might go with that though.

Wounded maybe?

Greythorne · 15/06/2012 19:23

Incandescent

MirandaGoshawk · 15/06/2012 20:05

Agree that 'saddened and disappointed' has veiled undertones of moral high ground. Any hint of anger and your ex-friend is going to be pleased that she's wound you up.

GrimmaTheNome · 15/06/2012 20:17

dismayed?

Why stick with one word, put in all yours and all the extra suggestions.

effingwotsits · 15/06/2012 20:20

Appalled?

sparkybabe · 16/06/2012 11:08

All good -i like dismayed, hadn;t thought of that one. Wounded too. I might stick all of them in, I think she should know how angry and hurt i am and that it did shock me. Not particularly sadddened (not now anyway) but disgusted certainly.

Going to be a long email!

Are you sure you really want to send the email. Compose it, but don't send it straight away. In fact, think about pressing the delete button instead. This might be a "less is more" situation.

But if you're sure, I'd go with the 'dismayed' option, as I think that conveys sad puzzlement the best.

sparkybabe · 16/06/2012 15:25

Oh what about 'horrified?' Puzzled, hurt, surprised, annoyed in one.

Edith - I think this will be the last i hear from her (hope so anyway) but I willcompose and sit on it for a while.

Dismayed is a bit low key for what you seem to want to say, I think.

Horrified doesn't convey hurt to me - just shock and disgust and, well, horror!

Devastated might be overstating it as well - too much power to her and possibly not enough anger.

I'd go for "mightily fucked off and upset" but then I don't do polite when I'm that upset over something.

I suggest strongly letting it all out in a stream of consciousness, swearing as much as you like, then sleeping on it overnight - re-read it in the morning and then modify it down as necessary. Then sleep on it again before you actually decide whether or not to send it.
