Is untreat a real word? DD's teacher thinks it is...

Grammar test - add `un' to words and cross out the ones which aren't proper words. DD and I decided to cross out untreat which is apparently wrong. Is it a real word? I don't think it is! And if it isn't, shall I go and ask the teacher about it?

Mistreat is a word. I'd leave it though, life's too short to fall out with a teacher.

LadySybilDeChocolate · 21/03/2012 20:56

or you could have untreated, as in 'If the disease is left untreated...'

blackeyedsusan · 22/03/2012 08:00

I get "brainfail" when preparing worksheets...

Ask her to provide and example of its use.

(Or if you are feeling mean, ask the Headteacher.)

an grr

nickelhasababy · 22/03/2012 13:31

untreat is not a word! what the fuck would it mean?! Grin

untreated, yes, but that's a passive past tense.

imnotmymum · 22/03/2012 13:35

untreat no, untreated yes. I am racking my brains to think where you would use untreat. "I will untreat myself and have an apple not that box of chocs!" no does not work.

VikingVagine · 23/03/2012 12:07

If you can use untreated as a passive past tense, you should be able to put it in the present tense, so untreat exists in theory, never heard it used though.

VikingVagine · 23/03/2012 12:12

Ok, untreated is an adjective, so no, it can't be changed to untreat.

nickelhasababy · 23/03/2012 12:16

adjective, thank you! Blush
(completely forgot the word)

lancelottie · 23/03/2012 12:17

Must be that sort of week.

DD came home with a list of 'Words and their opposites' to be formed by adding in or im in front. It included 'migrate'. No matter how hard we tried, we couldn't make 'immigrate' the opposite of 'migrate'!

lancelottie · 23/03/2012 12:18

I suspect DD's teacher already hates her for correcting her spellings and pronunciation (oh, and definitions) fairly routinely...

nickelhasababy · 23/03/2012 12:30
Grin

migrate is moving from one country to another.
so you need a word that means moving back from that country to the first country! Grin

nickelhasababy · 23/03/2012 12:31

i used to do that.
i'll be encouraging dd to do the same

startail · 23/03/2012 12:32

No

lancelottie · 23/03/2012 20:51

Ermmm... 'forced repatriation', perhaps? Deportation?

Don't get me started on 'flammable', Nickel. (Mind you, I feel there's more excuse for that one.)

Perhaps the teacher is getting mixed up with "entreat"?
