Pedants' corner

Of...as in should of

I am sure the true pedants amongst you will tell me I should have posted this in "am I being unreasonable?" but I need to know -am I being unreasonable in getting very angry and wound up when people make basic grammatical and/or spelling errors? If I spot one I can feel annoyed for hours, especially if I bite my tongue and don't correct the person who got it wrong. (My husband gets annoyed with me when I helpfully point them out).

The ones which really make my blood boil are:-

  1. "Should of"
  1. Getting their, there or they're wrong
  1. Misuse of apostrophes
  1. Practice or practise and advise or advice
  1. Using confusing sentences where the meaning is unclear like "the woman played the piano with wooden legs"
  1. Teachers who can't spell.

Am I the only one who gets really annoyed by these mistakes and if not, do the rest of you "helpfully" correct others?

I spend an unreasonable part of my working week correcting the spelling and punctuation of graduates. I am an accountant and they are writing reports and presentations. I make them print out their work and then go through it with a red pen. I am planning to start docking their bonuses but it's more due to their teachers than their own fault I suppose.

GinPalace · 18/03/2012 11:53

sliver and slither
stationary and stationery

Columbia999 · 18/03/2012 11:55

Will you itch my back for me?

Iwantcandy · 18/03/2012 11:59

Lose and loose.

I can't stand the fucking loosers who get it wrong Grin

Columbia999 · 18/03/2012 12:02

Iwantcandy · 18/03/2012 12:02

Ha ha fucking loosers

Shanghaidiva · 18/03/2012 12:03

You don't need an apostrophe after teachers unless you are adding another noun e.g.
it is because of the teachers' inability to teach them
or it is the teachers' fault

Iwantcandy · 18/03/2012 12:04

I once with an office manager who made some beautiful laminated signs for the stationary cupboards Grin

Argh there are loads!

FondleWithCare · 18/03/2012 12:15

Should of annoys me a lot. I've seen a few posters who write defiantly instead of definitely too, that annoys me immensely.

SpottyTeacakes · 18/03/2012 12:20

Oh yes and definately.

Iwantcandy · 18/03/2012 12:51

Should read "once worked"Blush

OP posts:
Iwantcandy · 18/03/2012 12:55

Shanghaidiva -interesting comment. I read that as "due to their teacher's ..fault" rather than as "due to their teachers, rather than their own fault" if you see what I mean.

I hate it when people say "I'm laying on the sofa." Angry

Or "I'm sat on the chair."

STABBY STAB!

Iwantcandy · 18/03/2012 12:59

What about a teacher who has written:-

"abanden"
"soliciter"
"dilema"
"potatoe"

On facebook. We're not close friends. Would you point it out?

MadameChinLegs · 18/03/2012 13:00

There's a building site near me, with a notice on the wall which says "Apologise for any inconvenience caused"

Now. It surely, should be either:

(1) "We apologise for any inconvenience caused"
(2) "Apologies for any inconvenience caused"

Angry
Chewbecca · 18/03/2012 13:09

Oh I am so with you on your whole list.
Can I add of instead of off ( I am of to the shops)?
I get crippled by these errors but rarely correct as i know it makes me look like an arse (which is true of course).
I do correct at work and I do regularly email the school about errors on their website.
I did not point out the error in DS's report last term out of fear!
Effect and affect seems to be a current problem too. Oh and there's another, current and currant drives me nuts too!

A new sandwich shop has opened nearby called Toastie's. Grrr, Toastie's what? I wonder if their sandwiches will be effected Wink?

FannyPriceless · 18/03/2012 13:09

I am more prepared to forgive mistakes made by a builder, than those made by a teacher!

And yes, OP, should of, would of - definitely make me feel stabby!

The two words guaranteed to provoke wrath by their very existence surely have to be:
'pronounciation'
'pedanticness'
Grin

Iwantcandy · 18/03/2012 13:10

Madame maybe it's in the imperative but they forgot the exclamation mark:-

"apologise for any inconvenience caused!"

i.e. a handy little tip on how to live your life Wink
