Pedants' corner

What do we think of "impact" used as a transitive verb?

I'd just like to pick my fellow pedants' brains on this. I'm proofreading a doctoral thesis by a non-native English speaker and it's peppered with the above- impacting the results, a construct impacted by the arts, etc. Would you allow this? I personally very much dislike it, but I believe it's acceptable in academia and I'd be grateful for any insight!

I hate it and use "impact" only as a noun. However, it's a bit of a lost cause - used all over the place. Maybe substitute for "affect" every so often if it's really frequent, just for a change?

Thanks jkklpu. I hate it too but am worried that my personal animosity is clouding my judgment! I like your suggestion.

Incidentally, what's the subject of the thesis? If it's science, I'd be more lenient, but arts I'd hammer it ....
