... I can't believe the number of threads I've seen recently where a poster has referred to someone being I'll when they're unwell. (Yes, I accept that some of them are probably attributable to DYOC - but not all of them.)

My iPhone corrects ill to I'll. Pisses me right off and I suspect that's the source of your ridiculous ire.

It is all autocorrect. Surely nobody would deliberately add an apostrophe? Maybe the other way round... (ie meaning I'll but writing ill)

No, I don't have an iPad - and I quite happily accepted that most of it was probably down to DYOC. But this is Pedants' Corner, after all; so surely I'm allowed a bit of ridiculous ire?

So - can any of you answer why it corrects 'ill' to 'I'll'?
It's not as though ill is such an unusual word.

Just tried it on my iPad and it came up on the autocorrect.

The joys of the iPhone! And the reason why it corrects it is because it corrects anything that it thinks may be missing its ', hell becomes he'll, etc!

Maybe because the iPad does not recognise illness, as being an Apple it is immune from viruses

I think it gives you the word you use most often as the autocorrect. Most people probably use I'll more than ill.

Well I'll be sure it's because they are typing it I'll but the iphone auto corrects.

My blackberry does this too. It also changes Mo to month. Now that really pisses me off.

If you had been complaining about there and their being used incorrectly I'd understand, but I don't honestly think anyone is spelling ill as I'll because they can't spell ill.

Apparently the loose/lose thing is autocorrect as well, which makes it a bit more bearable.
