"I was sat in the bedroom"

Is it 'I was sitting in the bedroom' or 'I was sat in the bedroom'?

Is it a dialect thing? I've only ever heard people use the latter up North.

'I was sitting' is definitely correct rocking. I don't think that can be disputed.

I think 'I was sitting' is 'correct' as in, it's correct Standard English, and in formal written English I'd always use the former. But some dialects use 'I was sat' and I wouldn't like to say that that was 'wrong'.

I also agree with ChippingIn that 'I was sat' can convey impatience or annoyance, or that you sat for longer than you expected to/wanted to.

And Jacksmania, yes, Benedict Whatshisname, really. [stern glare emoticon]

How about "I was sitting on Martin Freeman when Benedict Cumberbatch walked in, and really it would have been rude not to have sat on both of them"?

TeamDamon · 06/01/2012 11:29

I think that is perfect grammar - not to mention perfect manners! Grin

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 06/01/2012 14:15

I'd let someone else have Freeman. Sharing ? that's even better manners. Grin

But Benedict is all mine. Sorry.

iklboo · 06/01/2012 14:19

I don't get the Benecol Cummerbund thing either. Although I probably wouldn't get too annoyed if Mr Freeman told me 'I was sat on the couch', even if he does sometimes look like a baffled basset.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 06/01/2012 14:24

Heathens.

Grin at 'Benecol Cummerbund'.

PostBellumBugsy · 06/01/2012 14:30

"I was sat" drives me quietly insane every time I hear or see it. So, very, very wrong & so widely used.
In my case, I would be sitting on Ian Sommerhalder (ha, TeamDamon!) when Adam Levine walked in. If Adam hadn't begged me to leave, I could have sat on Ian all day!!!!! Wink if only

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 06/01/2012 14:41

Hmmm. Quite pretty, both of them. On balance though I'll stick with Benedict, although I was quite annoyed by that bit in Sherlock when he said 'you sent John and I'.
If he told me he 'was sat' I might have to get a bit Irene Adler on his ass. Grin

MrsWembley · 06/01/2012 19:02

'... John and I'??? I missed that bit. Good job too, or else I would have missed the rest of the story whilst I screamed at the television.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 07/01/2012 12:48

Yes, I almost missed the rest. Only restrained myself because I was watching with DP. Bitched about it afterwards though. Grin

iklboo · 07/01/2012 20:20

Nearly Sherlock Day ladies. With Russell Tovey as well. I might wee.

MrsWembley · 07/01/2012 20:59

I shall be on guard for any '... and I' statements out of place. Any more of this and I shall be writing letters to people. Hmm

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 08/01/2012 12:19

MrsWembley, I'll sign a petition with you if there are any grammatical fuck-ups this week.

Watched 'Scandal' again and it pissed me off all over again. The 'you sent in John and I' bit, that is. The rest just got me hot under the collar all over again Grin.

Russell Tovey ... meh.

PopcornBiscuit · 30/01/2012 19:19

"I was sat" is northern dialect.
