Must get these off my chest:
People who insist on pronouncing the final 'g' in 'ing' words - as in sin-G-in-G.
The trend for turning nouns into verbs - torching, mothballing etc.
Why is everyone talking about 'anytime soon'? What's wrong with 'soon' or 'in the near future'?
Phew!

Weather announcers who all talk about 'some decent sunny spells.' Wonder what indecent sunny spells are like. Hot?
What about the 'insecure shed' mentioned in our local paper? Or 'this door is alarmed' in my workplace? Since when did sheds and doors have emotions?

The use of the word super where you would usually use the word very.

He is super tall.

I was super happy.

Those jeans are super cool.

STOP IT IT IS AWFUL

tethersjinglebellend · 04/12/2011 20:19

YES GetOrf.

That makes me super murderous.

Get0rf · 04/12/2011 20:54

Where did it come from tethers.

WHERE?

It is all over the bloody place within the last 6 months.

tethersjinglebellend · 04/12/2011 21:19

I know!

One minute it was confined to the Boston area of the USA.

The next minute it's IN YOUR EARS.

I've lost friends over it.

Get0rf · 04/12/2011 21:21

Yes - it is the kind of thing I imagine very monied WASP americans to say.

Not youngsters in the UK with west country accents

iklboo · 05/12/2011 20:01

PLEASE can we have a Mumsnet dictionary/spellchecker? If I have to read 'appauled/appauling' one more time I might have to resort to violence.

EuphemiaInExcelsis · 06/12/2011 20:42

"DS is balling his eyes out." Xmas Angry

I imagine the child having at his eyes with a melon baller.

thepeoplesprincess · 06/12/2011 21:25

Personally, I'm getting quite perturbed at the way 'getting involved' seems to be creeping into common usage.

It just sounds bloody ridiculous.

Mytholmroyd · 07/12/2011 23:42

Forgive the intrusion ladies - usually just a lurker on this delightful topic but a dyed in the wool pedant.

Euphemia, is it not bawling? I use it all the time!

HighHeidYin · 07/12/2011 23:54

Why do I keep seeing 'chest of draws' being advertised everywhere? Is this a new abomination?

Mytholmroyd · 08/12/2011 00:00

Just realised I might have misunderstood, Euphemia, and you were referring to it being incorrectly spelled?

Sorry if so (creeps back into hidey-hole...)

LEttletownofBOFlehem · 08/12/2011 00:03

Of course it's bawling- I imagine Euphemia is saying she is apauled by the misspelling Xmas Wink

EuphemiaInExcelsis · 08/12/2011 07:00

Yes it's bawling, which is why balling gets my goat. Xmas Smile

Blackduck · 08/12/2011 07:22

Whilst I too personally hate sinGinG and spend most of my time correcting ds through gritted teeth, it is actually a regional thing....most people brought up round here will say it like that.

tametiger · 08/12/2011 07:47

Is it alright to say someone or something is 'all right' when you mean OK or well. See it everywhere. There was a movie called The Kids Are All Right. Is this a reference to their political leanings?
A local estate agent told me 'more people are choosing to let (homes)..' when she was talking about the tenant, not the landlord.

OP posts:
inmysparetime · 08/12/2011 16:18

"arksed" instead of "asked"; "I arksed him if he wanted to come round....".
Also
"he turned round and said....then she turned round and went to me, like, whatever..."
Surely all that spinning should make the conversants quite dizzyGrin.
Also
The use of "like" as a conversational filler word (as above)Angry
Don't get me started on "versing", the vein in my forehead is already throbbingAngry

MrsWembley · 08/12/2011 23:30

I was taught at school that it should be written 'all right', two separate words. But now it seems usual way to write it is as one, 'alright'. Don't know how I feel about this yet. Been several years, I know, but I'm still in two minds about it.

It's just good to know that someone else has noticed. I was beginning to think my memory was playing tricks on me. Smile

Bossybritches22 · 08/12/2011 23:50

Oh joy, I can be all judgy in company.Xmas Grin

"Haitch" instead of "Aitch"

"Loose" instead of "Lose"

and the Antipodean lilt at the end of every sentence?
