Reading books. I am irritated but I don't know if I'm right.

DD is five. She has various books from school and can read, I don't know what stage or type of scheme or whatever. We read what we're given as homework and read proper books at home Grin.

For half term she had one that had no punctuation in at all, despite being phrased entirely in questions. Annoying, but I imagine they have a crap reason. The other one Had Capital Letters randomly In It. Like that. Specifically "Is It too Much?".

My question is, why wasn't the 'too' capitalised? I don't think any of the words, excluding the "I" in "Is", should have been but why was that one left alone? I'm interested in case there's a proper, clever-type reason.

Any ideas? Other than I should get out more?

Ds had a couple like this with the random capitals. I remember commenting on it. The teacher said it was to help them with their expression, but that she found them hugely irritating. Grin

Do you think your books are the same?

I am very careful now, DD's reading book (the diary thing) came back last week saying "DD greatly enjoyed talking about the lack of question marks and that Mummy thought the books were silly" Blush. I am aware that I am that mother already.......

Maybe it is done on purpose. Confused

Oh I have no time At all For random Capitalisation. I used to work for a wanker who I don't think ever really understood what capital letters are for. And nor will your DD if you let her read this stuff.

I don't think there's any clever-type reason re the "too". I think it was an manifestation of the author's refusal to be bound by the constraints of punctuation-led convention on account of being a free spirit and all. So yes, a wanker.

EightiesChickOrTreat · 31/10/2011 21:38

No good reason for this at all and even if there was, the 'too' being lower case doesn't make sense, as only one word would be emphasised, surely, and that one would be the one with a capital letter? Plus all this is going to confuse them on the otherwise pretty clear rules about when you do and don't use capital letters.

What series/brand books are these? I will be looking out for them with a beady eye when I do school visits, with the hope of not seeing them.

Lord knows, I don't even pay attention to which level she's on. Oxford? Is that one? I think there was a tree The random CapiTals were another series, lots of RL photos and cheesy clothes. I had ClothKits flashbacks

I hate random capitals too.
Why can't they put the word in italics if they want to emphasize it? Confused

SlightlyJaded · 01/11/2011 16:58

Random capitals Are just wrong.

They serve no useful Learning purpose no Matter what some brainwashed newly trained teacher May believe.

They will just Confuse your DD. My DD is 6 and would be Really confused To find random Capitals in her reading Books as she is just getting to grips with punctuation and whatnot. Can't you Ask for some Different Books?

Typing that just made me feel quite ill.

ClothKits. Had forgotten all about these!
