Is it wrong to say 'try and' rather than 'try to'?

I hear it all of the time (including on Radio 4). I hate it!

Please be gentle with me, I'm only visiting Pedants' corner Smile.

It is try to.

You are following the verb "try" (denoting the action you are currently discussing) with the infinitive "to do something" (the action you are trying to accomplish).

So... I try to-swim
I try to-juggle cabbages

"I try and swim" indicates the trying and the swimming are not intrinsically linked, and simply doesn't make sense grammatically.
