In my defence I went to a lot of school and missed a lot of work.

I am not always sure when to and too should be used.

Can anyone tell an idiot me an easy way to remember please?

TIA.

too : as well as

to : go to, spoke to, walk to, to go, to speak, to, etc.

Someone will say it better than that though!

Hassled · 24/04/2011 09:59

What Summer said, although too is also used for too much.
So "I said there was too much chocolate in the house, and Fred thought so too."

Thank you very much Blush.

Don'tbe ashamed though.
I had a really grim education. I am fairly bright but ds1 sailed past me fairly early through the lucky combination of being very intelligent and having a fantastic education.

He started asking me questions I couldn't answer pretty young and he still says stuff like "mum, what's the name of that Sylvia Plath poem about....." or waxes lyrical about painters I don't know or books I haven't read.

I used to get self conscious but now I just recognise that we want our children to know more, learn more. And I have talked to him about my schooling and how he should enjoy the opportunities he has.
And then I go and read the book he talked about or look up the painter Grin

But don't feel ashamed or embarrassed.

You shouldn't be embarrassed. You should be proud - you are finding out the answer to something you don't know, instead of just ignoring or saying 'dunno' :)

How about this -

TOO - TO - TWO
*Too has too MANY o's and this sentence does too.
*To go, to do - the 'to' matches the spelling of 'go' and 'do'.

Q. What is the owl's telephone number?

A. Two eight - two eight - "two".

LoopyLoopsNincompoop · 24/04/2011 10:58

Good explanations above.

Basically:

too - also or overly (I love you too, I am too fat)

to - before a verb (to go, to live, to see) [technically, to make the verb an infinitive]

  • directed 'at' someone or something (to France, to me, to Sarah, to the mountains) [technically used as a preposition]
