Compound words, help please.

Trying to help DS with 11 plus preparation.

I looked for a list of compound words on line.

The list I found included "restrain" as rest - rain.

I thought a compound word was a blend of two words that blended together as one, such as blackboard or backlash.

So can you clever ladies please tell me is restrain or slither a compound word?

Thanks

Not as far as I know! The etymology of 'restrain' is ultimately Latin 're-' and 'stringere' (to draw, bind - so 'to draw back' or 'to hold back'). It it were a true compound word then it would be made up of the meanings of the two words that make it up. It's got nothing to do with either 'rest' or 'rain'!

Slither comes from an Old English word 'slidan', the same origin as 'slide'.

More briefly, you're right! Grin

As VI says they are not proper compound words, just word puzzles.
