apostraphes

I was at a school yesterday waiting to see a teacher and watching another teacher edit a brochure that I assume is going out to parents. The phrase 'road show's' was used several times and each time she did not see the glaring mistake.

However, on telling my dh and dd2 about this it appears that neither of them are clear about the use of apostraphes. To make matters worse my dd is supposed to be a top set English student and says she has never been taught this (don't believe that). So I need a good, clear grammar book - can anyone recommend one?

This is PC so am I allowed to tell you it's apostrophes?!

Sorry, sorry !!!!!

Try: 'Eats, Shoots & Leaves' by Lynn Truss?

Not being a pedant, but..

apostraphes?

haha!

DramaInPyjamas · 23/03/2011 09:13

arggh, x post!

ChaosTrulyReigns · 23/03/2011 09:15

This is good - we refer to it often. You'll need the accompanying answer book as well.

Sorry I am blushing as I type - my excuse is that my dh was standing behind me as I was typing this and I pressed send too soon as I didn't want him to see it. I did realise I had put the wrong spelling after I pressed send (I am so embarassed!)

I'd have kept my trap shut anywhere else, but as it's here I just had to. Don't be embarrassed though! Smile

senua · 23/03/2011 09:21

Um, I'm not sure that you need a good, clear grammar book. It's not that difficult!

Here is the bbc skillswise website

PS it's 'embarrassed' Grin

senua · 23/03/2011 09:22

Ha! That will teach me to be a smarty-pants on pedants' corner. I meant BBC

52Girls · 23/03/2011 09:23

X post but I was going to suggest Googling, there aren't many 'rules' to follow really.

Raymond Murphy Grammar in Use is boring as fuck but does what it says on the tin. In about 3 different levels.

HarlotOTara · 23/03/2011 09:46

Oh Jesus I give up!! I think the thought of writing in PC has made me so stressed my spelling has gone to pot. I will slink away......

However, my spelling aside, is no one shocked by the teacher's lack of correct grammar? I watched her read the pages twice and thought she would see it the second time. I was torn between telling her and appearing to be a show-off (PC puts paid to that however). Luckily I was called away.

Yes, I'm on your side HarlotOTara. I find it shocking when teachers make terrible mistakes in grammar and spellings. What an example!

I was in a school recently where they had a big laminated print out in a Year 6 classroom saying 'Responsability'. Grrrr.

trumpton · 23/03/2011 10:00

We had a letter sent home stating " We hope the new books will wet their appetite for reading " Ummm only if they read in bath or shower.< checks and re-checks post for errors.>

52Girls · 23/03/2011 10:30

Oh with you totally, Harlot.

Noticed a pub that was closed but due to reopen. Pub was called The Cedars. Big banner outside saying

X & Y look forward to welcoming you to The CEDERS.

wtf. They can't even get the name of their own pub right.

I have corrected spellings that DD brought home too. DD's teacher hates me Grin.

I was educated at a Grammar School and we somehow missed out on apostrophe teaching. I remember my first essay at college about Lord of the Flies and the tutor had gone through and inserted every single missed apostrophe and asked if I had never heard of them. Blush

TheVisitor · 24/03/2011 14:27

Apostrophes where they shouldn't be make me twitch, as do teachers who get it wrong. I had a discussion with my 12 year old daughter recently with regard to the pronunciation of 'advertisement'. Her teacher says 'ad-ver-tize-ment and not the correct English 'ad-vert-iz-ment. DD just would not believe me until she googled it. Mind you, the children's teachers all say 'haitch' not 'aitch', so don't know quite why I'm surprised.

peeriebear · 24/03/2011 14:28

There is a signwriting business here in town that actually has XXXX SIGN'S on their own bloody sign!! I bet they get loads of business.

Euphemia, it pisses me off! Not because she believes the teacher though, but because the ENGLISH teacher is getting it so wrong.
