Am I correct in thinking that these two words are pronounced more or less the same?

Is radio pronounced ray-jo?

How about fire? Fi-yer or far?

Choir? Kwyer or kwar?

Is recognise EVER reckernise?

Really - rearly
Rarely - rairly
Radio - raydyo
Fire - f-eye-r
Choir - kw-eye-r
No
My accent is Kentish, if that's any help.

I think it's an accent thing, but not so much over parts of the country; I think it's more public school vs everybody else (except reckernise, which is just WRONG).

there is some halfwit on the bbc who thinks the person who assists you clerically is a seckuttery.

I don't know who he is, but he must die.

Terpsichore · 27/03/2011 11:55

If you're Kirstie Allsopp you pronounce 'fire' as 'faaaaah' and 'balloons' as 'bloons'. Also 'creating' as 'crating'. I guess with her it's a posh thing. Interestingly the 'crating' pronunciation seems to be quite widespread as I hear it regularly on radio and telly.

There's a certain continuity announcer on R4 who always says 'rayjo' and it never fails to enrage me. Three syllables, please - 'ray-dee-oh'!

Clarnico · 27/03/2011 13:43

yyy about crating

Heston Bloomingidiot is the worst, he is crating dishes left right and centre.

But then I find he is an irritation on all fronts tbh.

Jux · 30/03/2011 08:59

Def a posh thing. I was a kid really and rarely where pron the same, and all the pronunciations I've put in my op were what we used (except of course, reckernise).

I think we crated things, but generally just made them. The accent was beaten out of me once I started at the comp.

My relatives, who all went to public schools, definitely crate things, though now we're all grown up it's usually described as inventing (one cousin has been on tv with his mental crations a few times).

I started this thread because dh has, in the last few years, started saying 'reckernise' and I know that I wouldn't have married him if he'd been saying it like that then! (Joke, I think......Hmm). It was grating on me so much that I lapsed into posh-talk and said something about the rayjo, cue much laughter and p-taking. We agreed I wouldn't do it again if he started pronouncing the g .....

Very silly morning.Grin
