'Keeping it fresh'

I've been wondering about this for ages, years in fact, and I'm asking here as I'm not sure.

When someone talks about, 'keeping something fresh', is that possible?

I've always thought fresh was like new, either it is or it isn't, so you can't keep something fresh.

Someone please tell me.

(and don't point out my bad spelling/grammar)

Means many things, but don't see anything wrong with 'keeping it fresh'.

I think the importsnt thing is that it's like new, it doesn't actually have to be new. So, meat kept in the fridge is "fresh" because you are keeping it in conditions which slow the deterioration - it stays "fresh", for a while at least...
