AIBU to think that you can't just "start" baby led weaning?

Because that defeats the whole object, does it not? A small thing but one that bugs me every time I see this in a thread title.

Hmm, true.

I guess you can 'allow it to start'?

If my 3mo DC grabs at my toast I will remove it, when they're of an appropriate age I will allow it.

Should it be 'allowed' rather than started?

Well it's the same principle as "I'm doing purees and BLW"
which means "I'm doing purees and finger foods"
but tends to cause an argument

Yes that annoys me too SPB!

Sayjay - how's about "start offering food"? That's what they're doing really.

ahh yes that's true
ykwim though - they say they are doing BLW after their baby has had 3 spoons of puree

gaelicsheep · 04/03/2011 22:03

Starlight, I'd say that if you are offering yoghurt - on a spoon clearly - and baby has the chance to accept or throw it at you refuse then that is still baby led.

I say "doing BLW" or "giving that baby led thing a go" - neither of which are perfect expressions Grin

gaelicsheep · 04/03/2011 22:21

Weeell, I was kind of meaning in the circumstances where you are actually "doing" BLW, as in you've already established there is no tongue reflex still there, baby can pick up, chew, swallow etc., just can't quite coordinate spoon to mouth. Just that you want to offer yoghurt without quite so much mess as your method would imply!

Anyhow, it was just a thought that popped into my head and needed airing. I have an assignment to write!

BLW is offering food to a baby. It's a way of weaning, a process that involves two people. One of them can start the process; surprisingly not the one the name would suggest. But then you can start it, can't you?
