'Hopefully, the weather will be better today.'

It's wrong usage, isn't it? 'Hopefully' is an adverb and should qualify the verb.

Music to my ears to hear you say that. "Hopefully" is indeed an adverb and in your example can only mean that the weather is full of hope. I don't suppose it is.

What should you say when you expect/hope/wish for better weather today?

psychoveggie · 13/02/2011 20:21

You should say "i hope" or "it is to be hoped that". Having said that, i have accepted and embraced this usage of hopefully in informal speech, texts etc. I just wouldn't use it in anything formal. Sometimes i think we have to bite the bullet and accept that the usage of a word has evolved.

YY! there's a great line in Never Been Kissed where Drew Barrymore talks about the Copy having hope.

It's a classic and should be reeled out whenever possible! Grin
