Satyr - pronunciation?

onimolap · 08/01/2011 14:14

I pronounce satyr "satt-ire". But DS has The Lightning Thief as audio book, in which it's pronounced "say-ter". My DB says "sat-eer".

Does anyone know what is/are the correct pronunciation/s in UK (or elsewhere)? Especially which is closest to the original Greek?

Many thanks.

I say 'sat ear'
No idea if that's correct though...

StealthPolarStuckSpaceBar · 08/01/2011 15:16

i say
sat
ire (like anger)
never occuredto methat might notbe right

BerryLellow · 13/01/2011 11:28

I say it so it rhymes with 'fatter'

I'm probably wrong .

When doing ancient Greek at uni the Profs pronounced it

Sah-tur

When doing ancient history/literature and speaking English they pronounced it

Sat-eer

(I read Classics)

FingonTheValiant · 13/01/2011 13:56

Actually some said

Sat-tur

in Greek.

DandyDan · 16/01/2011 22:17

Sat-eer
Possibly sat-ur
but that's it.

ArsMamatoria · 23/01/2011 23:09

As Fingon and Dandy said.

They pronounce it 'say-ter' in The Lightning Thief audiobook because that's how they pronounce it in America and the book is american. 'Satt-ire'(satire) is a different word, though it does ultimately derive from 'satyr'.

My dictionary agrees with BerryLellow.

I'm glad I saw this - I've never been sure either, but haven't looked it up before.

Oops, yes, didn't mean to ignore CaptainNancy and BerryLellow. Both are right.

auntyfash · 23/01/2011 23:21

It's pronounced Mary.
