Hello, I've never posted in this area before but wondered if anyone could advise me?

I am currently updating my very old CV which contains several lists in bullet point format. To my embarrassment I have noticed that about half the points have full stops at the end of the sentence and the other half do not. I don't know which is correct though!

Which way should I go?

not sure, but bumping for you

My personal house style is without. And I don't do caps at the beginning of each phrase either.

TrillianAstra · 22/11/2010 17:23

I prefer not

I would treat the list as a single sentence and put a full stop after the final bullet point only.

If you want to be dead poncy accurate, then you can use a colon to introduce the list, and a semicolon after each bullet point, with a full stop at the end.

That's how I'd do it. Wink

I follow the rule that if there's any other punctuation in the point, like a comma, then I use a full stop. If it's more like a 'shopping list' of items, ie one or two word phrases, I don't use full stops.

Like catinthehat, I also don't use caps either, because the points are supposed to be continuations of the introduction.

Just my opinion anyway, I'm not sure there's definitely a right or wrong way. That's the way I was taught though by my editor. Smile

I think it looks better without TBH but wondered if there was a definitive answer.

I think capital letters look better though and maybe one goes with the other.

Attention to detail is critical in my line of work as well!

Ooh need to add that I use the same for all points, to keep it consistent. My first phrase in my earlier looks like I mean I take each point on its individual merit. But generally if they're all long phrases, then I use full stops for all (or semi colons, depending on what mood I'm in). And if it's a set of bullets with shorter points then I don't.

If that makes any sense Confused Grin

I'm with VictorianIce - it is a house style thing, though, so whatever you think looks nicest.

MrsDinky · 22/11/2010 17:30

Sorry, x-posted with last 2 posts. There isn't really an introduction, as it's a CV, other than the job title and dates. Most of the items are several words or up to 3 lines, so there are some commas.

I guess consistency is probably the mian thing here, thank you all.

Right or wrong, I use the following scheme.

Single word or two words per bullet point - no punctuation.

Clause or sentence per bullet point - end each with a semi-colon.

MrsDinky · 23/11/2010 11:06

I've opted for capitals and full stops in the end, tried semi-colons and it didn't look quite right.

Thank you all for your help.
