Does it come from Corporal Bloggs' own email address? I would go for "Dear Cpl Bloggs" and add a paragraph at the end "Please pass on my response to the Officer Commanding", I think.

I think it's like any other business where some administrative person will actually write and sign the letter but it's ppd as being from someone more senior. But then you'd normally get the name or the full title of the person involved.

Is the email address you have to respond to a generic one or a personal one? If it's a generic one (like [email protected]) I'd start the email "Dear [Name of Section/Department]" (so "Dear Pensions Department" or similar), while if it's one for a person (like [email protected]) I'd address it to that person.

Dear Department,

As per your letter of [whatever date it was], I am emailing to confirm my attendance at the All-England Jelly-Wrestling Championships in Buckingham Palace on December 23rd, assuming that there are still spaces available. My favourite jelly flavour is strawberry.

Yours,

does "assuming there are still places available" = spaces providing? I can't help but read the former with a sarcastic tone Blush

Go for "if there are still places [or spaces] available", then. I find "spaces providing" a bit confusing, but I see what you mean about the possible tone confusion.

Grin @ the jelly Grin Thanks alot... how do I sign off? Yours Sincerely?

It's an email so I'd generally stick to just "Yours" or "Kind regards" or something like that. I generally keep the more formal closings for letters. If you do want to make it more formal, use "Yours sincerely" if you are addressing it to a named individual and "Yours faithfully" if you are addressing an anonymous Sir/Madam or a department.

Thanks so much :)
