"Lettice"

I am not sure if anyone is familiar with the bunny rabbit character "Lettice"? If so, does anyone else share my issue here?

DD took this book out from the school library for us to read. While she cannot spell, aged 4, she is learning to, and my argument is that it should be spelt correctly.

DH says it is a name, therefore it is ok to spell it wrong, like many other 'names' that do not follow 'correct' spelling. He thinks you can spell 'names' any way you want to. While, technically I agree, I think for a child's book, this type of word should be spelt correctly, it is not like it is a play on words or anything. It is just spelt wrong.

Am I being unnecessarily pedantic and let it go? Or should I dig my heals in? A good friend agrees with me - she was going to buy one of these books for DD as it is all sparkly and pretty, but did not due to the mis-spelling of Lettuce.

What do you all think?

I see that everyone has already pointed out that it is a name and is spelt correctly.

As you were!

On the subject of strange names, the Victorians were mad for 'em.

Toilet, (I kid you not, so middle class she was Wink).
Nettle

all sorts! (I'm regurgitating this from Horrible Histories which I watch with DC's.
Brilliant! (And as we all know, factual!)

mathanxiety · 02/11/2010 19:57

Ah yes, glad I read it right through and can avoid flogging a dead horse.

The name comes up in Baby Names occasionally.

MyNameisLettice · 02/11/2010 20:09

No way! there could not possibly be some-one called Toilet! that is just Wrong!

Well as you can see I will bow down to the greater knowledge that is mumsnet. I shall never admit this in Real Life.

Agree with previous posters re the name (and how erudite is Gunpowder... - impressive!). However, I do see where you are coming from as a child might reasonably now think that is the way to spell it. When I was little I used to love the 'Just William' books (well, still do, actually) but misspelt the word 'savage' in a spelling test aged 8(thus got one mark fewer than Keith Hopcroft who won the prize Sad)because in the books they spelt it 'savidge' presumably mimicking the way the boys pronounced it...

GunpowderTreasonAndSNOTSleeves · 02/11/2010 20:14

imagine Toilet's wedding, the vicar could say "I now pronouce you husband and wipe"

scurryfunge · 02/11/2010 20:16

Yes, she would be a flushing bride.

MyNameisLettice · 02/11/2010 20:17

Bet it would be a crap wedding reception though.

bigkidsmademe · 03/11/2010 16:52

I think Boris Johnson has a daughter called Lettice!

I really like it, have done ever since being obsessed with Elizabeth I in my teens

But you should have seen DH's face when I suggested it (he is Glaswegian Grin )

IamSoStupid · 03/11/2010 17:18

lol at flushing bride/crap wedding/husband and wipe

I do love MN

Sinkingfeeling · 03/11/2010 17:28

I quite like Lettice too. I know two people with that name, both in their eighties, both have the nn Letty.
