If you were applying for a work experience post with a publisher, would you point out a typo in their letter?

Especially if one of the skills you were offering was proof-reading?

Not me, my DS - he's wondering whether pointing out the typo would be demonstrating his excellent proof-reading skills or saying goodbye to any chance of the job?

The typo was 'with' instead of 'which' by the way.

Point it out, it's probably a test!!

lollipopshoes · 19/10/2010 19:17

oooh, good question!

I think that I would be more likely to take offence at his temerity rather than impressed by his proof-reading

RustyBear · 19/10/2010 20:18

DS was wondering if it might have been deliberate too..

I would guess it was....just because of the type of job he's applying for. Good Luck to your son, hope he's successful!

Goblinchild · 19/10/2010 20:39

If he points out the error, he ought to say that he regarded it as a deliberate mistake he was supposed to pick up.
Then he gives them the opportunity to save face. Smile

thehairybabysmum · 19/10/2010 20:50

I would add a PS saying, i assume the deliberate error is....

spare any blushes

Dansmommy · 19/10/2010 20:56

I'd mention it at the interview in a very, very jokey way! Point out that he didn't know whether to mention it or not as he doesn't want to appear rude...that'll show them he's not actually arrogant.

If it isn't a test, they'll probably have spotted it anyway by now and be kicking themselves.

WilfShelf · 19/10/2010 21:01

Actually I would ring up an administrator and rather cagily ask if they thought any 'testing' is going on.

AuraofDora · 25/10/2010 20:58

oh yes
i work in publishing, it could be a test actually or just some in house sloppiness
it will do him no harm to point it out

AuraofDora · 25/10/2010 21:18

yikes
just realised we are recruiting atm.. feck

pickledbabe · 27/10/2010 12:20

I had a friend who spotted an error on an application form, and when he sent it back, he crossed out the error and wrote the correction above it very neatly.

He got the interview.

I should imagine if it's for a proof-reading job, it's got to be a plant, to see how many people notice it?

edam · 27/10/2010 12:37

Could well be a test. Goblin and hairy are right about phrasing it nicely to avoid any embarrassment, though.

Mumi · 27/10/2010 13:36

Yes, point it out - this is surely one of the few jobs you can get away with it in [hsmile]
