Pedants' corner

I love pedants' corner

I think it's taught me more about grammar than I ever learned at school. In fact I don't ever remember having lessons in grammar.

I can actually construct a sentence but now I know what the various parts are called and how they can interact.

:) I agree with you.

I love being corrected (as long as it's done nicely) and quite often ask for stuff to be explained to me.

MrsMadWriggle · 13/09/2010 18:19

It's nice to have a space where the pedants can practise pedantry in peace. I can understand why things can kick off in an AIBU thread - not everyone is that bothered about correct spelling and grammar. And I agree that people with dyslexia can find pedantry somewhat frustrating.

The only problem is I am alway paranoid about my spelling, grammar and punctuation here.

cardibach · 19/09/2010 22:21

I rarely, if ever, use and at the start of a sentence in real life. However, I find myself doing it quite a lot online. I think it helps to create a rhythm reminiscent of speech so it is appropriate in this context.

FunnysInTheGarden · 19/09/2010 22:26

I love being a pedant too. I flinch of I see 'see you their' etc

But 'And' can be quite a good way to start a sentence.

Anyhoo, off to torment the BF mafia.............

SmellsLikeTeenSweat · 19/09/2010 22:30

"And did those feet..."

'Course it's OK - but best not over-used.

I heart Pedants' Corner too. (Don't forget the apostrophe)

nameymcnamechange · 19/09/2010 22:34

Yes, it is indeed a marvellous corner of Mumsnet.

I just wish the fact that it is here would stop some of the unkind and unwarranted pedantry on the rest of the site.

NeedToSleepZZZ · 23/09/2010 20:02

I love you all! This is where I come to nod vigourously in agreement and smile, in relief, at some of your comments (I'm sure that the English language is being quietly but thoroughly ruined). Grin

PickledMoomin · 23/09/2010 20:25

Me too.

DP has been looking through some application forms tonight. He's an English teacher and looking for a maternity cover. One applicant uses "pupil's" throughout. I don't think she'll be getting an interview Grin.

Agree. 'Tis where I know people will feel my pain at the indiscriminate use of the letter a in place of the letter e.

GwennieF · 05/10/2010 21:40

Despite being a regular MNer for several months now, I have only just found this corner. How can I have been so blind? I must have missed so much...

BookcaseFullofBooks · 05/10/2010 21:57

I'm new to MN but Pedants' Corner feels like home!
My husband is dyslexic and I'm constantly having to bite my tongue.

IggitheImpaler · 13/10/2010 20:39

Gwennie I have been here for years and tonight is my first arrival here - where have I been? There is thread after thread of things that appeal to me.. feels like home! Blush

Maybe we should have a marketing campaign to recruit more pedants to this part of the board. Perhaps little adverts in AIBU. Can anyone think of a witty slogan?

takingchances · 15/10/2010 11:43

We could say, "Every time you misplace an apostrophe, a fairy dies. Come to Pedants' Corner and help put an end to this tragedy"

Alternatively, we could do a mini-quiz

"They have lost a)there b)their c)they're coats. Lost? Join Pedant's Corner"

GrimmaTheNome · 15/10/2010 11:45

Pedant's corner could only have one participant at a time.Grin

takingchances · 15/10/2010 11:48

Typo. Promise. Grin

MardyBra · 15/10/2010 15:59

Like the fairy slogan taking.

Heartsease · 15/10/2010 18:46

Brilliant name, MardyBra.

MardyBra · 15/10/2010 23:36

Blush shucks, thanks Heartsease. I'm normally a regular name changer but I might try and avoid revealing too much and stick with this one for a while.
