Pedants' corner

Embarrassed DS by pointing out an error in the Dreams shop

But the salesman argued back and was so sure of himself he's got me doubting. (And DS was furious with me)

A sign on the bed invited me to "lay down and try it out." I pointed out that it should say "lie down." He said it could also be "lay." Surely not? You lay an egg, or it's the past tense of 'to lie.'

Either way, DS was mortified. "What on earth was the point of saying that, Mum? It's just embarrassing."

So, who's right. The salesman or me. (Oh God, this is Pedants' Corner. Should that be I? )

You were right. And right to say something.

You're right - you can lay something down (transitive), but you lie down (intransitive). Or it's the past tense.

at pedantic children.

He's right though.

How much is a dream then? Grin

Well that's just ruined 'Lay Lady Lay' by Bob Dylan for me!

you're right, and you embarrassed your DS, which is the best part of being a mother.

Score on both parts! Grin

(and it is the Saleman or me? in your last question, too)

Er.... "was the salesman right?" "Or was I right?"
"Was me right?"

Hmm Dunno.
