Am I being unreasonable to think that published works should be grammatically correct?

I'm thinking of two children's stories, one of which says:

'If you're going downhill, go slow.'

(I always gently correct DS when he recites this - one day I'll explain the difference between an adjective and an adverb, but he's 3 and frankly I can't be arsed just now).

The other one says something like:

'Thomas was looking forward to seeing Jack. He would see how he was getting on at the yard'

  • again I correct this to 'would be able to' since it's referring to a future possibility.

It really annoys me that not only is the grammar wrong, but also my child is memorising sentences with incorrect grammar - at this age (perhaps at all ages?) he's more likely to recall what's in the book than my corrections.

i got really really wound up when going through 'AS Chemistry in a week' last year and the answers to questions were all WRONG!!!!
how could they do that? what is the point of a book that gives incorrect answers to numerical problems? or structural??????//////
grrr.....

Good gracious. That is unbelievable. Do you think someone's working by the 12 Monkeys principle of achievement?

There's all sorts of textbook errors out there, Speedy.

SpeedyGonzalez · 30/07/2010 00:22

That's pretty appalling. It's not a matter language evolving; people producing this stuff should put proper checks in place - what are proof readers for, after all?

Brace yourself- DD was recently bought this corker

No, YANBU!

They should also be factually correct. We have a number of children's books which are wrong.

The peacock showing it's grand tail being referred to as 'she'. The spider with six legs, the bumble bee collecting honey to take back to the hive. Bob the Builder who counts 'elephants' to work out, having heard the thunder, how far away the lightning is.

I'm sure there are more!

tethers that is AWFUL

yy Pigeon I get very cross about that too

And although I love the book 'No Matter What' I have to change 'if I was' to 'if I WERE' - would I be unreasonable to get my red pen out and change it in the book? I try not to encourage defacing books, but this is just WRONG!

... and yet, none of the reviews point out the error on the front cover.

cattj · 11/08/2010 23:21

That tells you something about the reviewer!
