Pink party for 3yo

DD announced to her best friend on the way to playgroup this morning that she is going to have a pink party with pink sandwiches, pink cake, pink crisps and pink drink. The cake itself will be pink as will the icing.

I'd planned to take her to the zoo (with her friend) so am a little alarmed by the pronouncement but am willing to go along with it. How the hell do I do pink sandwiches (with pink bread mummy) for a child who doesn't eat salmon, prawns, paste or ham and only really enjoys cheese and pickle sandwiches. Are there any good recipes for a pink cake?

Should I in fact tell DD that it isn't going to happen?

have you got a bread maker? couple of drops of food colouring should make for some nice pink bread!

Will she eat cheese spread? Could mix food colouring in with that too.

I think making the cake pink will be harder, apart from the icing, colouring sponge just makes it look dry and horrid. But Mary Berry's sponge recipe is a firm fave for me, yes I am my mother!

Yes, I have a breadmaker so will dust it off and give that a try. Might be a good idea to get her eating more bread anyway instead of picking out the filling and throwing the bread on the floor...

I think my mum has the Mary Berry cake book so will look through that as well. Thank you.

What about jam sandwiches - pretty close to pink... Otherwise, just go mad with the pink food colouring! Definitely get some of those pink wafer biscuits that were very big in the 80s.

But be warned - 2/3 year olds are inclined to change their minds. Before you get too caught up in it, I would keep checking with her over the next couple of days that it is waht she wants. In the 3 months leading up to dd's birthday her party plan changed on an almost daily basis. In the end we did what I wanted but I somehow made her think it was all her idea...

Could You add beetroot to the cake? Might make it moist, you'd only need a bit & it would colour it

will have a look for recipes

this could be good , it also has a pink frosting

azazello · 16/06/2010 21:33

That cake recipe looks fab and very very healthy - must be all the beetroot!

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately I don't think she'll change her mnd that much as she s totally obsessed with pink and has been for about 4 months. She has asked for a pink darth vader costume with a 'really really bg pink sword' for her present. I'm not convinced they'll sell that at ToysRUs.

You can mix jam and plain cream cheese for a sandwich filling - more cream cheese than jam and you get pink. There is a Robinsons strawberry and kiwi squash that makes a nice pink colour if you don't mind squash and it is not too luminous - even a teeny drop give a good pink colour.

Pink crisps would be very hard though! Can you do pink marshmallows instead? Pink ice cream? Pink wafer biscuits? You could do most of this as a picnic for the zoo and your DD would still see it as a party.

Pink Darth Vader can be done or this is cute.

azazello · 17/06/2010 11:51

Darth Pink is amazing! I might not show it to DD though

Thank you all so much. I'll tryout some of the recipes to see which she'll eat but am eeling all inspired.
