I think this ranks as the most trivial question I've ever posted. if anyone gets all serious about me worrying about cake I will, oh I don't know, get cross or something. but I just wondered.

and a related q - what do you do on their birthday?

We have two cakes. One for the family on the birthday itself and one for the party.

CMOTdibbler · 07/05/2010 13:13

Yes - this year DS's birthday is a Thursday, so he is having a friend to tea after nursery with cake (plus taking a cake to nursery), then a party on the Sunday

whatwasthatagain · 07/05/2010 13:15

Oooh yes. Cake on birthday for family, cake for party for friends, and cupcakes for school. But then, I love making cakes - and people do tell me they are delish

brimfull · 07/05/2010 13:17

family on b'day with childs favourite meal ,cake ,presents and balloons

Tortoise · 07/05/2010 13:18

Yes.
DD's party is on the Sunday so cake needed for that then Birthday on the monday, another cake needed.
And she wants a 'disco' cake for her party! Going to fun making that.

MrsJohnDeere · 07/05/2010 13:21

Yes. We've just had a cakey week.
Sunday ds1's party - cake (very little leftover)
Weds - ds1's birthday - cake at home, fairy cakes to take to school
Sat - another cake for my birthday

Got through a shocking amount of butter and eggs that week.

Jojay · 07/05/2010 13:21

My DC's think they're birthdays are on the same day

To be fair they're 3 1/2 and 18 months and I don't suppose they'll get away with it much longer.

Last year we had a joint party on a date between their birthdays (they are only a couple of weeks apart). DS2 was only 1 so he didn't care anyway, but DS1 who was 3 thought it was his birthday that day. Didn't do anything on their actual birthdays

hatwoman · 07/05/2010 13:27

doh. best get baking then.

dd's birthday today - gps, my brothers and kids are coming round for tea and party for friends tomorrow. bought a cake yesterday (I know...I don;t normally buy but things were frantic) but looks like I need anothe really. I guess I was wondering if I could get away without one tonight.

Yes and before (beats self with big stick) I made three...one for school, one for home and one for party AND I always do themed cakes....last year bowling ball and B.O.B. and the other has an Indiana Jones ruins and ball cake and wall e....

I have made a Nintendo DS cake and will make another indiana jones cake....

bamboo · 07/05/2010 13:35

Yes, but sometimes, if I'm pushed for time, the family one is just a bought shop victoria sandwich, iced at home.

bamboo · 07/05/2010 13:36

....or even a shop-bought one.

stealthsquiggle · 07/05/2010 13:41

Yes, but only one "fancy" one, IYSWIM - plainish cake/small cakes for birthday itself, traybake or little cakes for school, fancy themed cake for party.

As for what we do - if birthday is on a school day - open one present before school, and then my parents generally come round for tea after school to admire "home" presents (us, them, anything that came in the post).

stealthsquiggle · 07/05/2010 13:42

hatwoman - if guests are coming for dinner, you could always stick candle / sparkler in pudding instead?

Judd · 07/05/2010 13:49

Could you just buy him his favourite pudding for tonight and stick a candle in it?
DS has asked for pizza next Tuesday (actual birthday) and I will bung a candle in something so we can sing happy birthday - it's just family.
Next Sunday, DH will have created a birthday cake around a football theme for his party!

JackBauerIsZonerrific · 07/05/2010 16:04

Yes, absolutley.
DD1 helped make the cake for her birthday day and then I make the cake for her party as a surprise.

ChippyMinton · 07/05/2010 16:11

Yep. Tasty homemade cake of choice for birthday, when it actually gets eaten. Themed cake for party, for showing-off and party bag purposes.
