Has anyone made a '3D' birthday cake?

Thinking of getting one of these for dd1's 4th birthday cake.

Would like to know - has anyone made one? Is it easy or reaaallllly tricky? What cake recipe would you use - is it possible to do a jam and buttercream filling or otherwise you would just have this giant lump of cake? Looks brilliant but just trying to see if it'd be beyond my cake making abilities

3 d ones are quite easy to do. just choose something chunky...have a look at a few on my profile. My favorite is humpty. good luck if you try it.

make a few square ones and sandwich them together with butter cream and then shape them

Thanks Aly, I love the old lady shoe one! I'll give it a go - 2nd hand cake tins are selling for about £5 less than brand new ones on Ebay at the moment so not a lot to lose really!

Watch Ace of Cakes for inspiration!

I find 3d ones easier to make than regular cakes to be honest, I managed to do a Yoshi cake (pic on profile I think) with no experience. Have a go it's quite good fun!

My advice is if you use any kind of a novelty tin get some cake-release spray to grease the tin with - it is magic stuff for getting detailed moldings to pop right out the tin.

The only thing I find with them is you have to try out the cake quantity first . I have done Barbie princess several times and it has been a bit hard and it took ages to cook .
I prefer cooking and then building

Oh yes have seen the Barbie one - it does look a bit tricky, lots of 'fine detail'. Cake release spray, great idea, thank you!

It is actually one of the easiest cakes I have made !! Especially if you get icing already rolled out Plus you can easily cover up any cracks with piped butter icing !

Really? Thanks Rosa, you've given me courage where none existed
