We have about six children coming next week to ds's 5th birthday party. I live in Austria (have been here 10 years) and their birthday parties are slightly half-hearted I always think, so I want to do a party like the ones I remember from my childhood - ie pass the parcel, musical bumps/statues, sleeping lions, and birthday cake and biscuits etc.

This sounds daft but how do you typically order the games and tea? Party is from 3-5 - I'm thinking a bit of just playing at first, followed by games, then tea. Does that sound about right?! Am so out of touch!

Also - any other games suggestions?
Thank you!

I think people often put the sugarladen food in the middle of the games so that they have a chance to run some of it off?
But i may be wrong about that.
Other games:
Pin the tail on the donkey?

I used to start with a finding game.
Gather up lots of small themed toys (in our csae they were mini animals) and hide them around the house. As they arrive you can tell each child to go and search for the toys and when they find one they hand it to you in exchange for a sweet.
Make a pinata with a balloon and paper mache, filled with tiny wrapped sweets. Hang it up and they take turns to be blindfolded and bash it with a stick.

I have always done play, games, tea, little bit more play and then birthday cake.

I have just had ds's 5th, got a bit carried away and invited 15 children, 6 will be much better. I didn't need as many games as I'd planned. The game which went down the best was 'Don't eat Tommy Smartie' a mumsnet find here. Do try it, it kept them all engaged and sitting down and they only ate on average 3 smarties each so not a sugar orgy.

Thanks everyone, these are all really helpful. Definitely going to do a pinata and the tommy smartie game sounds good too
