I've only done it for grown ups and we had little flapjack bites and coconut bites as well as lots of fruit and marshmallows.

You need quite a lot of choc and it needs to be mixed with a flavourless veg oil so it runs ok. I find it works better to do it in a bowl over a pan of hot water but in theory you can do it in the microwave.

Id be inclined to try it out first and see if it'll work with white choc. It's slightly trickier to melt (although shouldn't have any probs as you're adding oil), but it won't stain! I'd also give each child their own bowl of goodies to dip, rather than letting them help themselves tbh.

Good luck!

Oh lord I had a bad time with the chocolate fountain I bought. I took it back.

You have to mix oil with the chocolate iirc which didn't appeal to me.

And the cleaning it up afterwards! Dc weren't too bothered about it either way

GetOrfMoiLand · 09/02/2010 13:46

Oh god no. Not with 5 year olds.

I am with Riven - dd has asked for one of these for years. She is 14 now and has never had one. The chocolate is vile anyway (like others have said, a lor of oil is added).

Make a big song and dance about pass the parcel and other party games and she will forget abou the choc fountain idea. Or get a pinata - great fun.

tootiredtothink · 09/02/2010 13:50

Oh come on you miserable buggers , live a little.

Agree, the thought of mixing the oil is gross, but worth it for fabulous time.

Keep kids around the table to eat it to lessen mess around the house.

Tis a pain in the arse to clean the bottom of it tbh but they're cheap enough now to chuck after a couple of uses .

Dip in strawberries, grapes, marshmallows, bread sticks, kiwi - any and all fruits you like really.

BendyBob · 09/02/2010 13:51

I ended up throwing most of the chocolate away the oil in it seemed to turn everyone off. It was such a waste of an awful lot of choc (you need a large qty of chocolate to get it going)

GetOrfMoiLand · 09/02/2010 13:59

Lol at misreable bugger

I think parties for 6 year old torture anyway, without the chance that one of the little darlings will go haring round your house and smear chocolate all over the show.

we bought one used it once on ds birthday nobody wanted to look at it again

babster · 09/02/2010 14:06

A friend did one for her dd's birthday and it was fab - she bought the choc from Thorntons (microwaveable bag I think) so didn't need to add oil. Was a big hit.

BendyBob · 09/02/2010 14:11

Lol agree GetOrfMoiLand

Now a gin fountain...! I'd be well into a gin fountain.

hazlinh · 09/02/2010 16:15

hmm didn't think the idea of a choc fountain would have generated such a heated discussion Thanks for the tips everyone!

Hadn't thought about the mess. But we are cunningly having the party at school

Now i'll know not to have any choc fountains in my house whatsoever for future parties

We have one and the kids adore it. Agree that you have to buy quality melting chocolate. Not just any chocolate as then you have the oil issue.

You can buy bars of the stuff from catering suppliers.

Buy long wooden skewers to put the food on.

Recommend honey comb, marshmallows, grapes, strawberries and bananas.

ilovesprouts · 09/02/2010 18:28

i won a brand new one in a shop raffle ,never used it

WingedVictory · 09/02/2010 19:09

Oh, these are horrible! They have to add something to the chocolate to make it flow, and it is DISGUSTING. Please don't get one; it is sick-making.

mumoverseas · 17/02/2010 12:56

I went to a kids birthday party last week where they had one and it was a HUGE success. They had marshmallows, slices of kiwi, strawberrys, melon and grapes and the kids absolutely loved it (as did the adults)

seb1 · 17/02/2010 13:02

We bought this for DD's 7th birthday party. kids loved it, a bit messy but no oil to add just melted chocolate. HTH. Chocolate Fondue

hazlinh · 12/03/2010 07:21

oops sorry forgot to come back and update, it was a great success, the kids loved it :D only thing is, the fountain stopped working halfway, prolly due to wear and tear (cos it was loaned to me by a friend) so i had to get it fixed at an electrical shop bt it's fine now and we're using it again for my dad's birthday this week :D
