My DD has just started nursery in September and has already started going to a few kids birthday parties. Now all she talks about is what she's going to do for her birthday and who she's going to invite. Problem is her birthday is 22nd August ( I know ages away ) I was wondering if anyone else has kids with birthdays in the summer what do you do? have a party before or after the school hols or invite people and hope they show up or aren't on holday???

Why not wait till the first weekend they are back into the new term?

Oh they'll come - there may be a few on holiday, but I always had my parties on or around the 17th of august and i was never a billy no mates.

Just think of the pros (hopefully nice enough weather to have some of the party outside.

If you can't wait til summer why not organise an easter hunt and invite a few friends to that. You'll get to know them and sound them out for a summer party.

Have fun!

My dd2 has 2 friends with summer birthdays.

One has a Hallowe'en party every year, the other a "Christmas" party a t the end of november.

Seems to work well enough!

We always hold it the last Saturday before the start of school (usually last Sat in August). Most people are back by then but dd is at primary school where attendance is obligatory - could be less clear cut for nursery age.

Personally I wouldn't have a party the first Saturday after they've started back at school - as they're all quite tired after the first week back - again this may not apply to nursery aged dc.

The advantages are (a) the weather (hopefully!) (b) you can plan it at leisure and you can enjoy doing the preparations together as part of holiday activities (ie buying plain party bags and decorating them with potato prints or foam shapes etc) - it ends up much cheaper (c) its a nice "full stop" to the end of the holidays (d) most of the guests are free ie have not yet started Saturday afternoon activities (again this probably only applies to older dc) but good to bear in mind for when your dd is older.

Hope your dd has a great time ...
