Hi Could anyone give me some advice on having a science party at home, it is for ds 9th birthday only inviting 8-10 kids. I have contacted a company called sublimescience to do it ( not booked yet) and would be really grateful to anyone if they have either used them themselves or any recommendations for any others. Also I would love some ideas for decorations, party bags, food etc. Thanks

OK just some random thoughts:

1 You can get disposable white overalls quite cheaply in multipacks (like on CSI etc) that they could colour in and individualise themselves.

  1. Likewise, lab suppliers of cheap safety glasses/goggles, face masks, ear defenders etc could give you a supply of cheap (couple of quid each) prizes for pass the science parcel.

Food menu how about an evolution theme - they did something similar at an event celebrating Darwin's 200th anniversary.

  1. The Precambrian Earth - no life on earth
crusty bread rolls or choux buns (representing the earth) with something hot and melted in the middle (cheesy mushroom mix?)

Life begins in the oceans with algae - you could have deep fried cabbage (like crispy seaweed) and some fish goujons?

Then come the dinosaurs. There's a good link here for dino themed food

www.ehow.com/way_5434787_food-dinosaur-birthday-party.html

Then finish with Asteroid balls for desert as asteroids wiped out the dinos. recipes.smashits.com/22063-recipe-asteroid-balls.html

Science party bags, have a look here www.sizzlingscience.co.uk/pocketmoneysciencetoys.html

Hope this is helpful.

I am the worlds worst procrastinator and this was the perfect excuse to not do work in an enjoyable way for ten minutes

I bought a book called ' Einsteins science parties' from amazon and did it myself. Ds was 6 but we played with magnets, did some chromatography and made volcanos with bicarb and vinegar and red food colouring. There are plenty of ideas in the book to keep you going and with older kids there are more possibilities.

I did a science party for DS, having tapped Katz for ideas. Much cheaper than hiring someone in, and we had a blast! The boys absolutely loved it

My science teacher friend did a a science party for her ds -6 on sat.
This is what she did;

Have the children make dna models out of cocktail sticks and jellytots on arrival so they have something to do and don't go loopy.

Have 3 activities at different parts of the room 1.she had purple cabbage water to be mixed with lemon juice, handwash, lemonade and fairy wwashing up liquid. When mixed they made a range of different colours. If the don't like the colour they have -boys didn't like the pink - ask them how they will make the colour they want. 2. The second station was cornflour mixed with a little water and blue/green dye. Pour it onto a table and try to splat it/throw it/pick it up. It is a liquid that thinks it's a solid.

Can't remember the last one but she did end with mentos mints poured into a bottle of coke which makes it fizz shooting feet up in the air.

She split the kids into colour groups and then they went to each station in that group. After they had done their experiment they sat in a circle and played pass the parcel/ split the atom ( tie a balloon around your ankle and you have to try to burst others' balloons whilst protecting yours)

The kids loved it and my ds has been talking about it since.

I bought DS astronaut ice cream(freeze dried) for 'show and tell' at school and the kids absolutely loved it! He wants a space party so he can have some more when he is six.
