Taking DD and friends to theatre for her birthday and we're having party tea in the cafe beforehand. Have erred on side of caution timewise knowing it will take a while to get everyone together and then the inevitable loo trips before the theatre but downside is could be left with time to fill in the cafe, so thought would go prepared with some games/activities to do at the table but am in serious need of inspiration!

Needs to be not too raucous as there'll be other people in the cafe, nor too messy so glitter is right out

Wordsearches/ colouring related to theatre production.

Word-mining - you give them a long word or phrase eg. "Jack and the Beanstalk" and they have to find words of three or more letters out of it.

They could have their goody bags early - include one of those mini Scratchcraft pictures they could be getting on with.

Competitions - name the teddy, guess how many sweets in the jar.

How about some of the sticker/activity books around at the moment. Give them out in a party bag with coloured pencils etc. And then they get to take them home afterwards.

Great ideas thanks! Like the sweets in jar thing ... they could then take the sweets into the theatre with them. Anything you can think of that we can have them play together?

grab some pencils and some pieces of paper and do the game where each person draws a head then folds over the paper and passes it to the next person to draw the top half, then the bottom half and lastly the shoes.
It's something I used to play a lot as a child and my own dcs love it too. It'a quiet, fun and cheap! The dcs will love revealing the odd characters they have drawn need to fill more time you can always make up a story where each child tells a bit and then the next person takes up where they left off

We used to play that game as a child too! Well remembered. Great idea. Also remember doing the same thing but with a story ... one person thinks of a name, next says what he/she is wearing, who he/she marries, what they eat etc.

Fantastic!

Take 15 small object with you. Divide group into 2 teams. Place said objects onto table for 30 seconds, then remove out of sight. Each team then has to try and remember what the objects were. Forces them to whisper to each other so the other team doesn't hear what they've remembered!

Brilliant Titchy!
