So work, in their infinite wisdom, are organising a murder mystery party for our Christmas do.

I was quite looking forward to this as I do enjoy the odd bit of dressing up, and flatter myself I am not in bad shape considering dc2 is due in six weeks (neat bump and unusually generous cleavage).

There were hints that it might be either 1920s gangster or 1950s Hollywood themed, so with this in mind I was watching some rather luscious maternity evening dresses on Ebay, eg this one, which would have been fabulous for a Monroe-a-like starlet, or this one with long pearls for a flapper.

Now, however numbers have dictated that the theme will either be Victorian or Horsey.
[sigh]

Obv a certain amount will depend on which character I draw to play (if it is Madame Jojo the exotic dancer I will get that white dress) but I just cannot visualise anything Victorian that is compatible with a bump, let alone what the committee members of a riding club whose president has just been murdered should wear.

Clever ideas and sympathy will be received with thanks...

(and obv I have nothing in my wardrobe that fits except 2xjeans, 1xcombats and 7x dull maternity tops)

Che - lots of the card shops (clintons et al), do elasticated tutu's... one of them pink t shirt, wings - sorted.

Well i thought it was funny too. I only used her quotes and thought it very funny she was being flamed for being old fashioned and not coming across too well. I even managed to find out that she said of breastfeeding as a 'horror'. She'd have made a great (love to hate type) mumsnetter.

Anyway, I managed to actually learn some history of an evening which makes a change.

I don't know if this idea might help but I am going to a Sound of Music fancy dress as 'the hills'. I got a tight grass green top for £2.50 from Primark and will stick cotton wool on my tits and belly for snow. Although the tweed plan sounds good - you can get great tweeds form charity shops. just as I thought I'd cobbled together an adequately horsey outfit (humungous tweed skirt, riding boots, Barbour) the theme has been confirmed as farking Victorian.

ok I have solved it - took a mere half hour last night while DH was watching The Thick Of It.

• brown empire-line evening dress of my mother's. Shape is not strictly historically accurate but it is long, swishy, goes over the bump and still zips up. Plus another skirt underneath to make it stick out more.

• fake fur of this ilk that has been in my wardrobe since the year dot and should really be in the dressing-up box

• long black gloves from army ball c.1995

• black stockings (best not to enquire re provenance but still better than maternity tights)

• prissy black heels with buckle, normally worn for choir concerts

• elaborate Princess Alexandra-style hairdo with diamond sparkly clips borrowed from dd

• and all the bling I can lay my hands on in this lunchtime's charity shop sweep

if the dress is v necked remember to stick some modesty lace under there. sounds great.
