So work, in their infinite wisdom, are organising a murder mystery party for our Christmas do.

I was quite looking forward to this as I do enjoy the odd bit of dressing up, and flatter myself I am not in bad shape considering dc2 is due in six weeks (neat bump and unusually generous cleavage).

There were hints that it might be either 1920s gangster or 1950s Hollywood themed, so with this in mind I was watching some rather luscious maternity evening dresses on Ebay, eg this one, which would have been fabulous for a Monroe-a-like starlet, or this one with long pearls for a flapper.

Now, however numbers have dictated that the theme will either be Victorian or Horsey.
[sigh]

Obv a certain amount will depend on which character I draw to play (if it is Madame Jojo the exotic dancer I will get that white dress) but I just cannot visualise anything Victorian that is compatible with a bump, let alone what the committee members of a riding club whose president has just been murdered should wear.

Clever ideas and sympathy will be received with thanks...

(and obv I have nothing in my wardrobe that fits except 2xjeans, 1xcombats and 7x dull maternity tops)

chegirl - get that white dress I linked to

NB mp this is not my Worst Ever Party. Did you not see the pics I posted from the 'cartoon character' themed work Christmas bash a few years ago, with three bright young PhD students dressed as fairies beating the hell out of a gingerbread house with their wands?
I wasn't drinking at that one either...

I seem to have missed those pictures

I'm sure I would remember them...

AlexandrinaVictoriaGuelph · 03/12/2009 22:04

Queen Victoria beginning to get a bit of flaming here

chegirlwithbellson · 03/12/2009 22:08

How the hell do you wear a maternity bra with that dress MrsB ?

Aitch sort of reveal by stealth. Havnt actually announced it. Mentioned it a few times as part of my general rants. Have you not been paying attention?

Thinking of length of knicker elastic and some pink georgette stuff.

How to cover the massive boobs though? Important not to alarm the kids.

MrsB how about going as a brood mare?

MrsBadger · 03/12/2009 22:09

I'm sure you would, mp

there was also a leading scientist dressed as a Smurf, with all visible skin painted blue

we do not have a good track record, I confess

Che - lots of the card shops (clintons et al), do elasticated tutu's... one of them pink t shirt, wings - sorted.

MrsB - no idea. Sorry. But please please please please post pictures after the event.

chegirlwithbellson · 03/12/2009 22:15

I am off out tommorow to get all I need. Stop putting it off and take action!

Good luck with your quest Mrs B

MrsBadger · 03/12/2009 22:16

chegirl, it has internal support, donchaknow (and I would expect so at £179 new)

really, get a maternity party dress, there are tons on ebay and you might even wear it again
this one is even pink...

MrsBadger · 03/12/2009 22:20

You are due in 6 weeks.

You should go as whatever you like.

I defy anyone to tell you you're not dressed properly.

When I was 34 weeks I went everywhere as an angry ball of hate. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

AitchTwoToTangOh · 03/12/2009 22:42

hahahaha angry ball of hate.

and CONGRATULATIONS CHEGIRL!!!!

chegirlwithbellson · 03/12/2009 22:47

chegirlwithbellson · 03/12/2009 23:08

Thank you Aitch

Angry ball of hate

Not really the image society portrays of the serene pregnant woman!

PerArduaAdSolInvictus · 04/12/2009 13:32

I've been quoted in the Roundup! Not as good as tethersend's obv, but it's my first

nevergoogledragonbutter · 04/12/2009 19:34

making it onto the roundup makes up for the lack of takers on my queen victoria thread.
think i got a 'we are not amused' on that one.

AitchTwoToTangOh · 04/12/2009 21:55

was that you? i wondered who it was... v funny.
i thought my round up quote didn't make sense.

nevergoogledragonbutter · 05/12/2009 18:46

Well i thought it was funny too. I only used her quotes and thought it very funny she was being flamed for being old fashioned and not coming across too well. I even managed to find out that she said of breastfeeding as a 'horror'. She'd have made a great (love to hate type) mumsnetter.

Anyway, I managed to actually learn some history of an evening which makes a change.

bellathesouth · 06/12/2009 20:23

I don't know if this idea might help but I am going to a Sound of Music fancy dress as 'the hills'. I got a tight grass green top for £2.50 from Primark and will stick cotton wool on my tits and belly for snow. Although the tweed plan sounds good - you can get great tweeds form charity shops. Good luck! Bella and the bump

MrsBadger · 07/12/2009 09:21

update

just as I thought I'd cobbled together an adequately horsey outfit (humungous tweed skirt, riding boots, Barbour) the theme has been confirmed as farking Victorian.

It is New Year's Eve 1899
I am Florence Sweet first wife of the notorious rake and womaniser George, Earl of Coddingham and mother of his ballet-dancer son and heir (so I must be at least 40).

here are some late 1890s fashion pics

I'm screwed, aren't I?

I am sorely tempted by the nightdress idea, I must say

nevergoogledragonbutter · 07/12/2009 21:33

i love fancy dress like this.

i'll see what i can find for you.

MrsBadger · 08/12/2009 09:07

ok I have solved it - took a mere half hour last night while DH was watching The Thick Of It.

  • brown empire-line evening dress of my mother's. Shape is not strictly historically accurate but it is long, swishy, goes over the bump and still zips up. Plus another skirt underneath to make it stick out more.
  • fake fur of this ilk that has been in my wardrobe since the year dot and should really be in the dressing-up box
  • long black gloves from army ball c.1995
  • black stockings (best not to enquire re provenance but still better than maternity tights)
  • prissy black heels with buckle, normally worn for choir concerts
  • elaborate Princess Alexandra-style hairdo with diamond sparkly clips borrowed from dd
  • and all the bling I can lay my hands on in this lunchtime's charity shop sweep

You have all been so good that I promise I will post photos...

AitchTwoToTangOh · 08/12/2009 10:44

if the dress is v necked remember to stick some modesty lace under there. sounds great.

morningpaper · 08/12/2009 10:46

Sounds great

Just make sure you don't go into labour on the night or the paramedics will be telling the tale for years to come...

AitchTwoToTangOh · 08/12/2009 10:50

have you thought about a bustle? cushion pinned under the back of the skirt/s?
