Do you remove sweets and chocolate from party bags?

If so would you prefer you kids didn't have those things at the party to eat as well or is it just in the party bags that you mind?

Nope. My dd's love the party bags and a few sweeties every now and then isn't going to harm them.

mazzystartled · 03/10/2009 20:06

Oh I just let them have them then and there. If there are any sour haribo I nick them encourage them to share. If there is anything left at the end of the day it gets binned.

They don't get sweets any other time generally, and DS has got to 5 and is taking on the healthy eating message big style, so moderates himself and only has a few. DD just stuffs the lot down.

Hulababy · 03/10/2009 20:23

No. 7y DD can have whatever is in her party bag there and then, or can chose to save it til later. And when at a party she can eat whatever is on offer. She eats a pretty healthy and balanced diet the rest of the time, and is very good with what she will eat, no fussiness at all. I just don't have to worry about a handful of sweets every so often.

When she was smaller she didnt like sweets, so I would let her have the chocolate and I would eat the sweets

IWantCleanCarpets · 03/10/2009 20:24

Sometimes, if I can get my hands on them soon enough

Hulababy · 03/10/2009 20:26

You know, even if there was a full class party for every child in the class - that is still only 30 days a year, out of how many? It rea;;y isn't much sure;y?

JackBauWooohooohoowaaer · 03/10/2009 20:28

I remove DD2's sweets as she is only 2 and has been given things in wrappers and stuff I wouldn't want her to have.
I do vet DD1's though so I can tell her what she can and can't eat on teh way home

preciouslillywhite · 03/10/2009 20:30

My mum was a sweet denier in the 70s (before it was fashionable )

...so when I left home I lived on Topics, pints of full fat milk and cream crackers. For weeks.

Same goes with tv rationing. As someone who's been on the receiving end of Puritan Parenting, I would say let them have everything in moderation. Otherwise you create this air of mystery and desirability round all the things you don't want them to have, and as soon as they can choose for themselves, they'll choose them.

BloodRedTulips · 03/10/2009 20:30

[wow] some of ye are fecking mad

You do realise they probably won't spontaneously combust if they have some sweets, in fact they may actually enjoy them.

And sugar free stuff is often far worse as the chemical sweetners are nasty as hell.

In answer to the OP dd and ds1 are 4 and 3 so generally by the time they get home they're turning green anyay so i let them have party bag bits spread over the next few days.... they generally get bored by day 3 and we end up with a bag full of sugary junk that either gets forgotten about or dp tackles at some point.

ConFuschias · 03/10/2009 20:30

Only cos I want them for myself Though DD is getting wise to that now.

Hulababy · 03/10/2009 20:32

Actually DD isn't allowed to eat it int he car. Hate the idea of getting my car all sticky. But before and after definitely ok.

foxinsocks · 03/10/2009 20:34

I love sweets

I just wish more people would put those little bottles that look like pints in party bags. Or space ships. I do nick the purple sweets (are they parma violets?). I LOVE those and have told the kids they won't like them

cleaningsucks · 03/10/2009 20:34

what franklymydear and BloodRedTulips said. what harm is a few sweets going to do. jeeze and peas - do you ever rest for attending to your children. leave em be people.

jackieOpaperLANTERN · 03/10/2009 20:35

i can't believe you lot are taking your kids sweets off them!

why??? it's only sweets, not cocaine ffs!

BloodRedTulips · 03/10/2009 20:35

I should add, the party bag dd got at the last party she was at was an absolute blessing, she'd fallen and broken her leg and it was an hours drive to the hospital in a car with hardly any suspension.... systematically munching her way through the party bag kept her mind off the pain and meant she was on such a sugar high by the time we got to the hopspital that her perkiness made them decide against admitting her overnight

Hulababy · 03/10/2009 20:35

lol foxinsocks. I love sweets too. DH doesn't get it. I am often to be found hovering near DD's sweet basket. Nothing like a bag of Haribo to get the energy leel bussing for a while. Not too many though - after a while I get a bit shaky

bluejeans · 03/10/2009 20:37

foxinsocks my DD got a goody bag from one of those retro sweetshops today and I got the parmas violets as she doesn't like them. They were gone in seconds!

morocco · 03/10/2009 20:39

rofl at mumsnet sometimes

bluergh to sugar free sweets - grim. apart from that, yeah, they can eat whatever's in there (unless I fancy the look of it). haribo is disgusting though - would rather some magic stars/mini mars bars

ApplesinmyPocket · 03/10/2009 20:43

I wouldn't and never have removed anything but find that usually DDs eat about two and then forget about the rest - which are then discreetly binned or eaten by piggy me.

mwff · 03/10/2009 20:43

i ration sweets because my dd is overweight despite our best efforts at healthy exercise and diet as a family. considering the options i'd rather she saw sweets as an occasional treat than had to put up with years of bullying at school. hope that's okay with you jackie & tulips

mwff · 03/10/2009 20:44

oh and we have parties every couple of weeks on average so when it's a packed bagful each time it does make a difference.

ApplesinmyPocket · 03/10/2009 20:45

PS I particularly love the much-maligned Haribo so feel free to send any my way that are not deemed suitable for your DCs - can travel.

foxinsocks · 03/10/2009 20:45

I am already looking forward to Halloween

I love Lovehearts too. Especially the white ones. I am going to buy a huge tub for Halloween with all these sweets in them!

FimbleHobbs · 06/10/2009 09:25

I don't remove anything from party bags - I sit DC in front of the TV when we get home and they gorge themselves on all the rubbish. Its a treat for them and gets it all out of the way if that makes sense. Then they have a long bath and thorough brushing of teeth and its back to Sensible Parenting Mode (for an hour or two at least).

gorionine · 06/10/2009 09:30

I only take out if containing gelatin. I agree that sweets are part of the fun in the party bag but as mwff said if they had a party every other week I might reconsider but ATM it is not becomming a huge part of their diet both because they have 3/4 parties a year and because they do tend to share with their siblings who have not been to the party so it is not a huge amount of sweets anyway.

moondog · 06/10/2009 09:34

Yes, it sickens me how much crap people jame these with. I went to a party recently where the grand finale involved a father upending a huge bag of crap on the floor and the parents laughing as the cildren scrabble for it all.

Yuck.

I limit sweets so that when they do have them, they really enjoy them, in the same way that when I have a treat (a pudding or a glass of wine) I really enjoy it too.
