What on earth do you DO at a 2 year olds birthday party?

We're having a few of DD1's little friends over to help her celebrate her 2nd birthday. I'm a little bit late in sorting things out (maybe because DD2 is four weeks old) but I've suddenly realised that I have no idea what to get a bunch of two year old girls to do apart from play together like normal and eat cake whilst wearing pretty dresses.

Please steer me through my sleep deprived state to some wonderful realisation of what two year olds do at parties

DD's was just a glorified coffee morning .... except it was afternoon. The mums had tea and cake and the little ones just played as per usual! It wasn't until she was 3 that we started doing games and stuff like that.

musical games such as statues? might last a few minutes!

ring a ring a roses

can you find a parachute somewhere?

sleeping bunnies?

pass the parcel

cheap bouncy castle if you have a garden

sit them all down with some bells etc and sing something with them

and if you can manage all that set up as an entertainer!!

DS's birthday is a bit later in the year so as it was a lovely sunny day we put the paddling pool up and bought a pack of disposable swim nappies for the guests.

If it had been raining we would just have put some toys out in the living room and let them run around a bit before fueling them up with cake.

Thanks for the ideas. What do people think to getting the girls to decorate cup cakes? We're having a family party as well so DD will still get a proper birthday cake.

they'd like that - perhaps put the icing on for them and they have bowls of sweets to put on top?

Get a bubble machine or give all the adults a bottle of bubble mix each, and get the children to chase and pop the bubbles. Get someone else to take photos while they do it, it'll look sweet.

The kids at our playgroup LOVE playing around the sandpit, too. Or if it's all girls you could ask them all to bring a dolly and/or a pram to play with, and let them all push them round the garden.

Don't forget the kids songs and do some dancing with actions, like incy wincy spider, head shoulders knees and toes, etc
