...would you want them to watch the film 'mamma mia' at a birthday party, or is it too 'adult', in your opinion??

I would say no

there are plenty of films aimed at that age group

suwoo · 19/04/2009 18:23

Mine hasn't seen it but really wants to. I would have no issue with that at all and I reckon it would go down very well with DD and her friends.

noonar · 19/04/2009 18:23

ok, this is tricky. my dd has been asked to a party and the mum has asked me if i mind dd watching it. i'd really prefer that she didnt, but dont want to sabotage the party...

I douby they would sit there and watch it, tbh

a bit that they would show a dvd at a birthday party

bigTillyMint · 19/04/2009 18:28

I think the more adult lines / inferences would go way over their heads - mine are 8 and 9 and haven't got a clue, they just like singing along

noonar · 19/04/2009 18:28

the theme is very adult though, isnt it? and its quite rauchy in places.

ok, i teach year 5,and sometimes we watch a movie just fro fun at the end of term. i woudnt even contemplate showing this to my class, for obvious reasons. so why would be ok to let my 7 yo watch it?

OP posts:
noonar · 19/04/2009 18:29

'raunchy'

I don't see the point, show HSM instead

ramonaquimby · 19/04/2009 18:33

I wouldnt' be happy, there are plenty of other movies out there for that age group. I have a dd in year 2 - what about enchanted, or parent trap, or charlotte's web..... they maybe don't carry the street cred that mamma mia does these days though.

noonar · 19/04/2009 18:33

its a sleep over, hence the dvd.

i feel really awkard as i dont want to dictate the content of someone else's party. other parents are fine with it, and i dont want to deprive dd of going to her first ever sleepover...

My 5 year old has watched it loads of times - it's a great 'girls' film'

noonar · 19/04/2009 18:35

i agree. i'm really happy for dd to sing along to abba gold in her bedroom, but the film is rather inappropriate, imo.

twinsetandpearls · 19/04/2009 18:35

I would let her go as she will feel left out. They will just sing and dance all the way through and talk through the other bits.

Smithagain · 19/04/2009 18:36

Personally I think it's too adult and there is no need to show something that is not designed for that age group. It's a PG, presumably for a reason, and I would be inclined to say I didn't want DD to go, and reap the consequences.

(DD's friend in Yr 3 has seen it with her family, is obsessed with it and sings all the songs, so it's obviously appealing to that age group. But even if the adult stuff is over their heads, I don't like the idea of planting the ideas in their heads at such a young age).

noonar · 19/04/2009 18:37

ah, lily, funny you should say that. it'd actually be happier for dd2- nearly 5- to watch it, than my 7 yo, as it would go over her head more. dd1 is quite savvy and would be full of questions beyond her years...

'i agree' aimed at ramona. x post

suwoo · 19/04/2009 18:41

I've not seen it, is it along the same lines 'sexually' as Grease? If so, all the adult stuff goes over DD's head and she just sings the songs.

noonar · 19/04/2009 18:48

yes but grease isnt suitable either, imo!

interestingly...just googled and found that in AMERICA its rated PG-13

We took dd and friends to the cinema to see it for her 7th birthday, they don't get all the innuendos and frankly don't really follow the storyline, but they all LOVED singing along. There's no harm in it.

onadietcokebreak · 19/04/2009 18:51

The beach scenes are a little risky for Children I think!

ByTheSea · 19/04/2009 18:52

I took DD to see it at the cinema and she enjoyed it. Anything she wasn't supposed to understand went over her head.

yappybluedog · 19/04/2009 18:52

I wouldn't let my dd watch Grease either, but I'm sure I saw it at the cinema when it was released, so I must have been 7 ish

[hypocrite emoticon]

ComeOVeneer · 19/04/2009 18:52

DD went to see it at the cinema with a load of friends and all us mums. They loved it and didn't question anything etc. They were all between 6 and 7 at the time.

donnie · 19/04/2009 18:53

my dd1 is in year 2 and went to see mamma Mia with a friend - the raunchy bits and sex references went straight over her head! I would let her go - for the music!
