Pop Star party for DD's 5th birthday

DD is mad on pop music and has decided she wants her birthday party themed accordingly with everyone invited to come dressed as their fave pop star (she wants to be the bird from the Ting Tings!).

I am fighting the urge to book a local kids entertainer who will do disco and magic show, as we really can't afford it, but would help if I had some ideas as to what to do with them for a pop themed party for 2 hours, so any suggestions?

Was thinking disco with lots of action dances(agadoo, ketchup song etc - with me and DD's godmother in full 'redcoat' mode no doubt ), musical bumps or similar and possibly borrowing a karaoke machine or getting a karaoke game for the Wii.

Any other ideas much appreciated. Did her party at home last year and really didn't enjoy it to be honest but can't afford the alternative!

That sounds COOL!

Action songs and kareoke will be mega popular I bet and take up lots of time. Are you eating?

What about doing like a pop idol thing and get themto practise dance/song etc etc then perform in front of each other?

What about 'Guess the pop star' time picture quiz? Cut out pictures from magazins and they guess the name. Is she too old for a pass the parcel where everyone who opens wrapper does something shwbiz-like?

Hmmmmm.... WIll be watching this thread!

How come you didn;t enjoy last year?

Never too old for Pass the Parcel!

How about putting them into a couple of teams, each armed with a newspaper and a roll of sellotape and giving them a time limit to create a new outfit (modelled by one of the team) for fave popstar?

mumblecrumble · 18/04/2009 20:25

Oooooh! Yes, outfits sounds good.

Dressing up definitely. Tesco have massive foam microphones for a quid....

MaureenMLove · 18/04/2009 20:29

You could even do 'Pin the microphone on the pop star' if you're feeling really creative!

Get a picture of a pop star and make a little microphone. Blu-tak the back and blind fold child!

MaureenM Love - thats GENIUS!!!! Pin the mic on the pop star!!!

They have blow up guitars on Asda. Good for air guitar.
Maybe you could play musical statues, but they have to strike an air guitar pose when the music stops. The blow up guitar could then go in their party bag.

Get pictures of a pop star / band. Back onto card and then cut into 10 or so pieces.
Team game as follows.
Jigsaw puzzle pieces at one end of room.
2/3/4 teams, however many is suitable. Each person has to run to other end of room and collect jigsaw piece and then run back to team with it. Next person goes to collect a pieve etc.
The team then have to put the pieves together to make up the picture.

I thank you!

TBH, I can make a pin the something on the something, out of any party theme!! [girn]

Could you make them a Guess The Song game, by just playing the intros of things they are likely to know?

If you know any teenagers, they might well be able to help with the dance moves and may seem a bit 'cooler' than you and your dh to the girls!

Wow - great ideas - thanks v. much! Am usually quite good with organising parties but had a complete mental block.

The main reason I didn't enjoy it last year was that it was the first time we had kids whose parents we didn't know (from nursery) and a couple of them just dropped their kids off and went. One of them, who I'd had reservations about asking in the first place (but DD was dead set on inviting them) ran straight into the garden, jumped on the swing and fell of the other side banging her head as soon as her mum left which just freaked me out completely. DH works with kids so soon sorted her out and she was fine, it just really rattled me.

DD's godmother always helps but she had commitments that evening so had to go halfway through. I love my daughter and her close friends to bits but I don't have a clue with 'strange' children - am not a natural in that dept at all.

Am thinking of enlisting at least 1 older girl to help with the dancing. She is the 12 YO sister of one of DD's friends. Godmother's DD will have just turned 15 so not sure she will be up for that, although she'll porbably help out generally with decorations, drinks etc. DH knows better than to get too involved with the organising, and we don't have the grandparents as our Mums can't stand the sight of each other.

So, we'll have Pass the Parcel (poss with them having to sing or dance in between layers!)and Pin the mike on the singer is genius! Would like to do guess the song/singer but think they might be a little too young and don't know that they'll all be pop fans like DD! Might do the jigsaw too.

Am going to black-out lounge and stick up loads of coloured fairy lights and borrow some disco lights from a couple of friends. Do black tablecloths with multicoloured foil stars and paper plates etc. And for party bags, shiny plastic sunglasses, disco ball necklaces and poss make some CD's of the party music up.

What's the verdict? !

Def like the idea of the CDs with th party music. Great idea and very cheap! I will be stealing that one.

Decorations sound lovely.

womblingfree · 20/04/2009 21:07

CD's v. cheap - can get a pack of 10 from Asda for about a quid, and a pack of paper enveolopes to put them in for a similar price. Already have some labels I can jazz up on the PC.

Am mostly looking forward to putting together DD's Ting Tings outfit - have already bagsied my Dad's tweed cap for the day !
