If you were to do a mermaid party for 3 year olds, what would you do?

Dd is very excited about her 3rd birthday and would like a party.

She mentioned a mermaid party, but I am a bit lacking in inspiration for what to do mermaidwise.

I could fairly earily sway her on the merits of a princess party instead which seems a lot easier to do. But she does have some boy friends and I don't see them entering into the spirit of a princess party.

What to do?

go with it. lots of blue and green and sparkly silver.

loads of fishes and star fish.

food is easy enough, you can get those fish shaped nugget type things.
star fish shaped cookies, cucumber and carrots sliced with a veg peeler can be seeweed.

ooh it sounds fun.

Make it an 'Under The Sea party' You will get at least 10 pirates, but thats fine.

DuffyFluckling · 16/04/2009 10:44

She only knows about 4 friends so it will be pretty small.

I could make it an under the sea party. Then there's scope for mermaid girliness but it won't bore the boys.

But still, what snacks to do? What activity or games?

So. Fish shaped food (am veggi so won't actually do fish). Starfish cookies. A mermaid birthday cake.

Sth with shells somehow...

A fish piniata (sp?) thingy.

Pass the parcel.

The soundtrack to The Little Mermaid.

Will be in the garden. Was thinking of making crowns for princess party. We could decorate fish instead. Or a racing around game instead.

ohhh, the cake - I made one for dd last year. This isn't mine, but one like it here

I bought the Wonder Mould (Dolly Varden) cake tin online and it had instructions for how to make it. Think it only cost me about £20.

It was a good buy because this year she wanted a princess and at christmas I made a snow covered hill and polar bear. cant remember where I saw the pan, but it was something like cakes direct??

Do the flap the paper fish along the ground with a magazine game

DuffyFluckling · 16/04/2009 10:57

Wow. Reading that site, people go completely over the top for small children's birthdays.

Perfect cake LtEve.

She keeps talking about the princess cake in a bakery we pass that is one of those with a doll sticking out of a big cake skirt.

Perfect.

Ooh yes, fish flapping. I'll have a practice later and see if she can get the hang of it.

We live in a warm country so I could do a bobbing for fish sort of game. Will prob have the paddling pool out anyway.

Excited now!

She is so looking forward to her birthday. She has found the move hard (we're very new here) and had a pretty rotten 6 months what with one thing and another, so if I can do a super party that would be nice.

Living in a warm country - that website delivered to Cyprus, so no problems there

You could make / buy mini pink meringue shells and stick them together with cream and put silver balls in the middle to look like pearls and oysters.
I like the pirates and mermaids theme too. You could make jewel biscuits - plain shortbread shapes, coloured icing and different sweets. Starfish sandwiches. Skips for crisps (slighty shell shaped), different coloured jellies with fish-shaped sweets floating around inside them, child-friendly cocktails with mini umbrellas,
Pirate and mermaid party themed party bags/ treasure chest boxes.

Islands game - put out sheets of newspaper, these are the islands, play music, children swim around the islands. when music stops they have to find an island (one each), gradually remove the islands. winner is child left on an island.

Paddling pool and sandpit with beachy items.

Pirate ship game - give children different instructions that they have to follow, e.g. rats on board.

Wow, how exciting wish I was coming!

LOVE the pearl / oyster thing.

I think we might do decorating biscuits (ocean shapes) with icing and jewels (sweeties).

Pin the tail on the mermaid is a brill idea.

What's the priate ship game?

My DD had a mermaid 3rd birthday

Games: pin the leg on the octopus, digging for treasure (gold coins and glittery marbles) in a sand box), decorating paper fish (which we taped to lolly sticks and made them swim around).

Food: Cheese cut into fish shapes, tuna sandwiches, prawn cocktail crisps

Cake: A regular round cake with sweeties on it and a plastic mermaid. It was the mermaid's castle!

We had boys too and didn't do any pirate stuff. They were happy enough with the fish theme.
