Is a Gardening Party too much for 3 year olds?

I would be very grateful for some collective MN knowledge. I am planning my 3 year old's birthday party and was thinking of a spring-themed gardening party. The children (about 10, all 3 year olds) will get to decorate individual plant pots, then fill with soil and plant a seed. This will then be their party favour, along with a piece of cake and bottle of bubbles. I was just wondering if this is too much for 3 year olds? My daughter is the first in our group to turn 3 so I really don't know what kind of party would be best for this age group. Should I just stick to the bouncy-castle formula?

Thanks in advance.

My DS 2.9yrs would do this with some help and guidance from me, so it would work but be pretty labour intensive on the parents. Also his interest would only last maybe 15 minutes max on it. By far his idea of heaven would be a bouncy castle - you wouldn't get him off that for 2 hours. But then the gardening idea is also lovely...

Can you plan in a lot of digging in mud and soil and water? That would keep them happy. I agree their attention wanders at this age, you need a lot of activities or free play.

I did this as part of a craft party but for 7yos - it was great fun but very work intensive!

At 3years some of them just may not 'want to'. I'd say go for the bouncy castle (sure-fire hit) but do this when a bit older.

ooo, just as I feared then.
Thing is, my daughter is a very quiet girl who loves doing this sort of stuff in the garden with me and I really wasn't sure if she was the norm or an exception. It's all clear to me now...think I'll stick with the bouncy castle and file this one for the future. I was just so excited to try this out...can you tell it's for a pfb

Thanks for the replies

I think a gardening party would be great, including for a 3yo. Mine would all have enjoyed one at that or any age. But you just have to make the activities appropriate for a group of 2-3 year olds.

Resist the bouncy castle hegemony, branch out with a gardening party! EVERYONE does bouncy castles.

mmm, that's a point Fennel. It doesn't have to be all or nothing, does it? I could keep the theme and just make it less structured with more free play.

I think it sounds a lovely idea.

You've inspired me to try something similar for ds1's 3rd birthday. We're just having a small party at home (5 children) but all the mothers who are coming are keen gardeners and will enjoy this much more than party
games (even if the children are non-plussed).

What about including a bug hunt. Either real bugs in the garden, or toy ones hidden ready to be found? 3yos can do that sort of activity. Or you can hide chocolate bugs if you like.

You could do games including things like snail races. pin the petal on the flower. Pass the parcel with a garden themed prize. Optional fancy dress with garden theme. Obstacle course around the garden.

ooo Fennel, those are so much better than anything I came up with. Loving the bug hunt, though I think toy ones are more my type than real ones
I'm getting really excited now. Some of those games don't even need a sunny day to play
