What are the best sandwich fillings for a children's party?

Most of the children are 4/5. I was going to choose really plain fillings so that they are more likely to find something they like, but is that too boring?

ime the sandwiches are the last to go after all the cakes and biscuits and crap
usually fillings like jam, marmite, ham, cheese will do

muggglewump · 16/02/2009 15:09

I'd go for plain too, it's easier. I'd also use white sliced bread.
Cheese and Ham and leave it at that I reckon.

I always do marmite but nigella style which is simply to mix the marmite with softened butter before spreading. Don't know why but just seems to taste nicer.

I personally use brown bread just because thats what we always have. Also do cheese sandwiches.

But agree with ggirl really wouldn't bother doing too many.

I also do sausages - just normal size ones cut up, cheese and pineapple on sticks and a few veg cut up with hummous. Also crisps, some fruit and biscuits.

Have fun!

I would go for jam, dairylea and perhaps ham.

Make sure that any vegetarians are aware that ham is on offer.

I actively avoid egg (common allergy) and anything that fussier children may prefer not to eat (i.e. no salad in the dairylea!)

Thanks for replies - that was what I was thinking but wanted to check

Grated mild cheddar and ham. Nothing more than that. I have learned the hard way that it is better to go for the simple basics or risk the whole lot being left to curl up and stiffen forlornly.

Well, after dd's party I woudl say doesn't matter in the slightest because sandwiches are not what they are going to eat

purlease · 16/02/2009 15:48

tuna seems to go down well too. For DD's 3rd birthday I did ham, cheese and smoked salmon (she loves smoked salmon!).

If you want to make the sandwiches look a bit more interesting do pinwheel sandwiches which involves flattening the bread, putting the filling in, rolling up and slicing into circular shapes.

SybilFaulty · 16/02/2009 15:51

Another good tip is to cut out the sandwiches into shapes using pastry cutters. My DDs (nearly 4 and nearly 2) reject normal sandwiches but happily ate their way through several shaped like ducks, flowers, hearts etc at a recent party.

Second the sausages thing. I think how many I will need and then double it, as the parents tend to eat them too and will always hoover up the remainders!

The ones that have gone down best for us are

Mini pitta pockets with cheese and tomato, tuna, egg mayo and ham and tomato. For slightly older children you can put the fillings and pittas separately so they can help themselves but it can be a bit messy.

Pinwheels made with wraps, spread the filling all over, roll it up and cut into rings.

Then things like mini quiches, mini cheese and onion tart etc

I find sliced bread always seems unappealing at a buffet

Oh and you must do cocktail hedgehogs!

One with cheese and pineapple and one with cheese and cocktail sausages.

electra · 16/02/2009 18:37

I like the pastry cutter idea. Yes we are doing the cocktail hedgehogs - cheese & pineapple and sausages Also have;

mini pizzas
crisps
cut up veg
fruit
cherry tomatoes

various types of biscuits
cake slices
