Victorian farm party - what food to serve?

DD is having her 7th birthday party at a local farm, with a Victorian theme. The children - all 6/7y girls - will dress up in Victorian clothes, have a tour round the farm and handle the animals, etc, and then go in the barn for traditional Victorian party games.

I just need to sort out food and party bags.

Any ideas of what and how to serve?

And ideas for suitable party bag gift?

Am slightly alarmed at google suggestions that alcohol really was included on children's parties in these years, but to avod giving children cheap champagne!!!

I would put a cup and ball wooden toy in the party bag (I think you can get them online I will try and find some) or a tin whistle?

Hulababy · 08/02/2009 17:53

The lemonade looks easy enough Yes, def fits in with work they have done last year and this. DD enjoys her history and loves reading about the Victorians particularly, hence her choosing the theme.

We have done princesses and fairies, and HSM, etc. in the past. Wanted something different for a change and the farm has this as one of their options.

I found a site onlien earlier with cup and balls, yoyos and skipping ropes, all wooden, all very reasonably priced. Might do it as a lucky dip rather than party bags.

It's a fab idea we don't have anything like that near us!

Have you been watching the Victorian farm prog?

Hulababy · 08/02/2009 18:05

Personally can't see why any different to any other theme though. The farm offered 3 or 4 options, this was one of them. DD fancied it.

Hopefully it will just be fun.

Hulababy, it sounds a lovely idea - very girlie.

My children's school is celebrating 40 years this month and they are going to give the children "an old fashioned tea party". I was a bit sniffy about it as my children always have an old fashioned tea party on their birthdays. I can't wait to see if the school tea is any different to what I give them (and also how authentic it is to the 1960s since I was around then!)

HeadFairy · 08/02/2009 18:08

You could get some old fashioned sweets from a quarter of

Hulababy · 08/02/2009 18:10

Yes, it will be an all girl party so will suit them well. It will be more like a proper traditional type party - which we haven't really done before - just the twist being dressing up and getting to go round the farm, handle the animals, collect eggs, etc.

The farm is a charity and they do a lot of work with local schools. We always go to their open days and have a great time. The parties are a new addition.

Damn, have just typed long message and lost it! Sounds lovely Hula - ignore the scoffers!!! I would think scones and jam for tea, maybe a piece of cooked gammon you could slice 'carvery style' if you want to go more rustic with some nice farmhouse bread (ham sandwiches of course but we are going for Victorian Farmhouse effect here , traditional lemonade, old fashioned sweeties. I wish I were invited!!!

Hulababy · 08/02/2009 18:14

Got to have scones - DD's favourite

So - traditional afternoon tea with real lemonade

and party bags - mini wooden toys

And bowls of humbugs and aniseed twists!

janeite · 08/02/2009 18:17

I like the lucky dip idea for party bags - I still think my ideas were as nice as wooden toys though!

janeite · 08/02/2009 18:17

Hula hoops good too.

janeite · 08/02/2009 18:17

Especially considering your name!

Hulababy · 08/02/2009 18:18

janiete - yes, they are nice ideas and will be including them in my search for things for a lcky dip.

Will def have some bowls of sweeties

hula hoops are not Victorian, janeite

hoops are - to be bowled along with sticks or something - I am very tickled at the idea of little Victorians in smocks or plus-fours whirling neon plastic rings round themselves!

janeite · 08/02/2009 20:58

Sorry - that's what I meant!

pointydog · 08/02/2009 21:13

lol @ wilburton

MsBrandybuck · 08/02/2009 21:21

How about these for the party bags?
