6/7 yr olds Party - would you give them Coke?

the liquid stuff obviously .

DC's very rarely have fizzy drinks (Xmas & very occasional trip to McDs ).

DS is having a party next week and was going to put out juice, squash & water but don't want the invitees to whine if there's no coke/lemonade! I also don't want the mums to think that their kids have been plied with fizzy pop and are then hyper at home later (as mine are when they drink it).

What would you put out for this age group?

juice, squash and water sound fine to me.

I did provide coke and lemonade for DS's party last weekend, as well as fruit juice, but it was his 9th birthday, and fizz is restricted to the odd trip to a pub/restaurant usually and he wanted them for his party.

no, i wouldn't. i wouldn't put it out for any age group lol
if they whine then let them. ungrateful mites

LoveMyLapTop · 06/02/2009 20:27

No I wouldnt But mine dont like it anyway

BlueCowBackToWondering · 06/02/2009 20:27

I only do juice or water.

Mine don't really like fizzy, and I want to keep it that way, and not see coke as a 'treat' If the guests miss it, they can have some at home!

twinsetandpearls · 06/02/2009 20:28

No.

nettie · 06/02/2009 20:28

Just had 4 seven year olds round for DS2 birthday party, they were hyper enough without fizzy stuff, they had fruit juice, water or milk with no complaints.

pagwatch · 06/02/2009 20:28

If it helps my kids are allowed lemonade but not coke as a treat. Waaaayyyy fewer baddies in normal lemonade ( NOT sugar free) than coke.
But if my DDs parties are anything to go by I would just put out juice and water. Most parents like me think that all the cakes crisps chocolate and ice cream is enough. Plus fewer kids will then vomit - which is
always good news. And its cheaper.

( you don't have kids that moan about the party food and drink do you ?)

hayley2u · 06/02/2009 20:28

i sumtime s buty the asda own fizzy drinks cherryade orangeade so pretty cheap but plenty to chosse from

catMandu · 06/02/2009 20:29

No

When dd1 had her 9th birthday we gave them oj & lemonade cocktails complete with umbrella and fruit - they loved them. Even at 9, they were still only given one and then moved onto juice.

Hassled · 06/02/2009 20:29

I wouldn't. Some parents do have very strong views on Coke, and some kids react quite extremely to it.

thingscanonlygetbetter · 06/02/2009 20:31

Thanks Ladies .

I go with squash and lemonade as the offerred drinks with milk and water available.

I'd avoid coke purely for the caffeine content and the effect it has on kids.

Unless the parents have pissed you off recently and then give them it 5 minutes before you return them

thingscanonlygetbetter · 06/02/2009 20:33

LOL muggle - someone did actually but her DS is not coming unfortunately!!

I never gave coke at children's parties but did give lemonade: suspect that's just as bad really but my daughters used to react noticably to coke and not to lemonade, so it seemed safer.

FrannyandZooey · 06/02/2009 20:34

no

pagwatch · 06/02/2009 20:36

janeite
they are not the same. Most brands of lemonade do have considerably fewer chemicals in than coke. My son reacts to loads of additives and chemicals but can still tolerate an occasional ordinary lemonade

thingscanonlygetbetter · 06/02/2009 20:41

Slightly off topic but DH likes a shandy when he's off work but I stopped buying lemonade as I can't find any without bloody aspartame in it. Tesco used to do a really good Finest lemonade which was basically just lemon, sugar and water but they stopped selling it , did have a little rant to the supervisor about that!!

Anyone know of anywhere else that does one? Not sure why I was worried about the aspartame is the lemonade though when I am sure there is loads of crap in the lager but hey ho . He has to drink it straight now!

These are the ingredients of the Waitrose lemonade:

Carbonated water, sugar, Spanish lemon juice from concentrate (3%), citric acid, natural flavouring, acidity regulator sodium citrates, preservatives potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate

No aspartame listed, but not sure if it's hidden in one of those other ingredients?

FrannyandZooey · 07/02/2009 10:54

oh Spanish lemon juice, that's alright then

most lemon juice better than coke, it is quite easy to get some where the main ingredients are water and sugar, with no aspartame
7 up is good and i think sprite is ok? not the diet versions

Hulababy · 07/02/2009 11:24

I haven't served fizzy pop at DD's parties yet and don't plan oo for her 7th, in April. I find juice and water goes down just as well. I like to use the cartons anyway, as less messy and far less chance of spills.

I have no problem with DD having a bit of fizzy pop, but I wouldn't want her drinking coke TBH. I think it is the caffine aspect of it to start with. Mind you I drink decaf coke and I don't let her have that either/
